This bug report is being closed since the original reporter no longer has this issue. It's better to have several bug reports with slightly different problems and different machines than to mess around trying to sift through several pages of rubbish to find one thing. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 692187] Re: desktop fails to appear without enabling failsafe graphics first
I have changed the bug report to just one problem, since the window bars seem fine now (possibly a partially broken update previously). I am using the standard Gnome desktop (not Unity). There were no changes made by myself to xorg.conf or anything (other than what I have done below if that changes any configurations). What I did (and have to do to boot to gdm) is: 1. Choose recovery mode in the GRUB boot menu 2. Choose X failsafe mode 3. Allow system to boot to gdm login screen. 4. Choose to restart at the login screen. 5. Allow system to reboot. 6. Choose the normal Ubuntu boot option in GRUB. Once that is done, there are no further problems, until the system is shut down or rebooted. ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/692187 Title: desktop fails to appear without enabling failsafe graphics first ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Following the instructions at the alpha 2 page under Known Issues using the nvidia-current driver failed, forcing X to start in low graphics mode. Excerpt from wiki page: Jockey (Ubuntu's restricted driver manager) doesn't yet support the new alternatives system used by the nvidia driver packages, so in order to install nvidia drivers you will have to install them from the command line: * sudo apt-get install nvidia-current (or nvidia-173 or nvidia-96) * select the alternative that matches the driver that you have installed o (e.g. /usr/lib/nvidia-current/ld.so.conf for nvidia- current): sudo update-alternatives --config gl_conf * update the ld cache: o sudo ldconfig * then configure your xorg.conf with: o sudo nvidia-xconfig * And restart your computer. I did select option 0 (ld.so.conf) in ldconfig as above, but it failed. Upgraded machine to Karmic, problem still there. It almost looks like interference, but actually more like the screen it wrapped around several times over the top of itself in about 5-6 single vertical lines. I am unable to provide a photo of this as the machine itself is a friends and I am unable to provide it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 372725] Re: thinkpad t61 slash/question key not working
@Raphael Thank you for testing this in Karmic. Can you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal: apport-collect 372725 This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to Change Non-Private data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!
