[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1878293] Re: xterm resize is wonky

2020-10-23 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
+ When I try to resize an xterm window the same way,
+ this happens instead: as the mouse is moved, the upper-right corner
+ does move, but it doesn't track with the mouse pointer like it should.
+ Meanwhile, the lower-left corner also moves (it should have remained anchored
in its original x-y position on the screen).
+
+ [ Test case ]
+
+ - Start Xterm
+ - Resize the window from its top/left corner
+ - It should resize normally, and not act as shown in
+
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/uploads/3c19763b7748ce76b0ba2958cde7636b/Screencast_from_02-04-19_14_03_24.webm
+
+ [ Regression potential ]
+
+ Windows resizing might not work correctly
+
+ ---
+
  % lsb_release -a
  No LSB modules are available.
  Distributor ID: Ubuntu
  Description:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
  Release:20.04
  Codename: focal

  % wmctrl -m
  Name: GNOME Shell
  Class: N/A
  PID: N/A
Window manager's "showing the desktop" mode: OFF

  Terms:
window has four sides: top, bottom, left, and right
when referring to corners, "upper" means "top", and "lower" means "bottom",
so the four corners are upper-right, lower-right, lower-left, and upper-left.
wonky: works wrong, as detailed below ("cases that work wrong...")

  Description:

I can resize a gnome-terminal window, everything works fine.
  (Grab it, using the mouse, by the upper-right corner (click-and-hold);
the size changes as the mouse is moved, because the position
of the upper-right corner follows the mouse. (Only the upper-right corner
moves.))
But when I try to resize an xterm window the same way,
this happens instead: as the mouse is moved, the upper-right corner
does move, but it doesn't track with the mouse pointer like it should.
Meanwhile, the lower-left corner also moves (it should have remained anchored
in its original x-y position on the screen).

  Cases that work correctly:
If the xterm window is grabbed by the lower-right corner and resized, this
case works properly.
If the xterm window is grabbed by the bottom edge and resized, this case
works properly.
If the xterm window is grabbed by the right edge and resized, this case works
properly.

  Cases that work wrong ("wonky"):
If the xterm window is grabbed by the left edge and resized, then the
opposite (i.e. right) edge (incorrectly) migrates.
If the xterm window is grabbed by the top edge and resized, then the opposite
(i.e. bottom) edge (incorrectly) migrates.
If the xterm window is grabbed by the upper-right corner and resized, then
the window (incorrectly) migrates.
If the xterm window is grabbed by the lower-left corner and resized, then the
window (incorrectly) migrates.
If the xterm window is grabbed by the upper-left corner and resized, then the
window (incorrectly) migrates.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1896475] [NEW] [FFe] Migrate to pipewire-0.3

2020-09-21 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

Various packages are now depending on pipewire-0.3 (or, in some cases
pipewire-0.2).

While this is not a main component for ubuntu (yet) we have various
projects depending on it, and some core components (actually mutter)
have a build-only-dependency on it.

Debian already completed this migration some weeks ago, while ubuntu
doesn't provide pipewire-0.3 yet and this can be blocking many
components to land in next cycle.

As per this, we thought that was wiser to anticipate the migration now
so that all the dependencies will be already in ubuntu at the beginning
of the next cycle, and we could start earlier the actual usage of
pipewire in the desktop for mutter (and other components such as the
xdg-portals).

All the packages have been prepared already in:
 https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/4265.1/+packages

You can refer to the diffs in https://bileto.ubuntu.com/#/ticket/4265 to
see the details of the changes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1896475] Re: [FFe] Migrate to pipewire-0.3

2020-09-21 Thread Treviño
Given that the changes include xdg-desktop-portal implementations, it's
fair to underline that snaps using them have been tested successfully,
and no regression has been reported so far.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1873403] Re: [nvidia] Screen turns off when trying to set some fractional scaling values

2020-08-05 Thread Treviño
Marking this verified again, as it was verified as fixed in version
3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 (see [1] and [2]), so given that the changes in
.2 [3] do not affect this behavior, we can safely consider it already
verified.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1873403] Re: [nvidia] Screen turns off when trying to set some fractional scaling values

2020-07-24 Thread Treviño
This specific bug can be then considered fixed.

The other issues, like bug #1875285 is still under studies, but looks
like it's a correlation of nvidia drivers and some specific cards (as
this update fixes that problem for a subset of them as well).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1873403] Re: [nvidia] Screen turns off when trying to set some fractional scaling values

2020-07-21 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
When the nvidia driver is installed, the screen turns off when trying to
set some fractional scaling values like 150%. And it stays off even
after rebooting and logging in again.

And from ssh I can see there's no current mode set anymore (just like in
  bug 1869750):

  $ xrandr
  Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 960 x 600, maximum 16384 x 16384
DVI-I-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1 connected primary (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
     1920x1200 59.95 + 59.88

- ProblemType: Bug
- DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04
+ [ Test case ]
+
+ In a Nvidia system:
+ - From g-c-c enable fractional scaling
+ - Set all the available fractional scaling values and ensure they work
+ + In any case the screen should be turned off
+
+ [ Regression potential ]
+
+ Wrong screen size is set and panning might be enabled.

2020-07-10 Thread Treviño
Please, check if fixes included in PPA mentioned at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-
center/+bug/1870736/comments/122 helps for this.

There are changes that should be quite linked to this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1805200] [NEW] Xorg crashes when it tries to resume a scale transformation after that Screen has been closed

2018-11-26 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

Happens in X.Org X Server 2:1.20.3-1ubuntu1, but also previous versions

Very easy to reproduce:
Start a simple (empty) X server instance (say Xorg :2 vt8)
Set a scale transformation
xrandr -d :2 --output eDP-1 --scale 2x2
Call xrandr again so that the server tries to resume the previous
transformation
xrandr -d :2

I've addressed the issue at
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/issues/14 and proposed
various fixes for that, but so far no feedback.

Marking it as incoming rls bug as this needs to be addressed as per
supporting xrandr scaling support in desktop.

 Status: Triaged

See attached journalctl that includes the Xorg.log

It's also weird that using `std` driver works in live, while not once
installed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1794280] Re: gdm doesn't start on a fresh installation of Cosmic Desktop

2018-09-27 Thread Treviño
Ah, one more thing to notice, if starting in recovery mode from grub,
and then resuming the run, it was always working (with std vga too).

Thus this looks like a race in initializing the things that xorg needs
to initialize vbe driver

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1794280] Re: gdm doesn't start on a fresh installation of Cosmic Desktop

2018-09-27 Thread Treviño
FYI to reproduce I've done this:

# Create the disk
qemu-img create -f qcow2 /tmp/disk.qcow2 10G

# Boot from the iso and install
kvm -drive if=virtio,file=/tmp/disk.qcow2 -m 4096 -cdrom
cosmic-desktop-amd64.iso -boot once=d -vga std

# After install... Then run with just:
kvm -drive if=virtio,file=/tmp/disk.qcow2 -m 4096 -vga std

As said passing `-vga std` is optional, but I never got issues with
`-vga vmware`, while it sometimes fails also with `-vga qxl`

# Can pass -netdev user,id=mynet0,hostfwd=tcp::-:22 -device virtio-
net-pci,netdev=mynet0 for ssh debugging

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1794280] Re: gdm doesn't start on a fresh installation of Cosmic Desktop

2018-09-27 Thread Treviño
S... Running from kvm itself it seems that this is reproducible but
seems related to some lower level issue (both using sil's command and
adding -vga qxl):

journalctl: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/rdkvsqs8Rs/ (with vga
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/vJsWbvwdDR/)
xorg.log: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/Dt3tMsHgPc/

In both wayland and xorg tries to get a drm device, but that's not set..

Generally when using `-vga gxl` this issue is happening in a randomic
way, while it's 100% happening when using the default vga (std, or just
not passing it) that is actually using vbe.

So, the weird thing here is that with the same kvm vga configurations,
we get a working session when just booting from the cdrom.

For some reason it looks like that the vbe driver for X isn't even tried
in this case; compare Xorg.log above with the one when booting from
livecd: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/QHJsTY2cms/

Then I think this is indeed not a gdm bug per se.

2018-06-25 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

GNOME shell and other 3D programs run using software rendering after
  unity removal.

This SRU covers only the upgrade case or if nux-tools removal happens
after this update, for people who already upgraded and in broken state
  another SRU will follow.

- [ Test case ]
+ [ Test case - FOR WHO UPGRADES TO BIONIC/ARTFUL ]

  · Install xenial
+ · Upgrade (nux-tools) and ensure that unity is still properly running after
+ a logout/login cycle.
  · Upgrade to bionic or artful
(assuming you're using a GNOME session)
  · sudo apt remove nux-tools
  · log into your session
  . From terminal:
    - printenv LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE
Should print nothing (and return an error)

Same should happen if you don't remove nux-tools but you change
`/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test` not to run properly (replace with a script
exiting 1), but you're running a GNOME session.

  · If running Unity session instead, ensure that
- printenv LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE equals 1 in case that you're running
- in an environment with no 3d support (VMs are easy tests)
+   printenv LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE equals 1 in case that you're running
+   in an environment with no 3d support (VMs are easy tests)
+
+ [ Test case - FOR WHO HAS ALREADY UPGRADED TO BIONIC/ARTFUL AND REMOVED
+ UNITY ]
+
+ · remove nux-tools from artful/bionic-release (pre-sru), upgrade,
+reinstall nux-tools (no prompt)
+ · remove nux-tools from bionic-proposed/updates (sru), upgrade, reinstall
+nux-tools (nothing should be prompted)

After an upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04, I noticed that all gnome windows
animations were gone. After some digging, it seems that gnome-session
incorrectly assumes that my graphics has no acceleration, when in fact
  it does: it's a i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Intel integrated graphics
  (i915 driver).

I've tried this with and without the xserver-xorg-video-intel package
(a.k.a. Intel driver) with the same behavior.

The output of gnome-session-check-accelerated is: llvmpipe (LLVM 6.0,
256 bits) however the system should have DRM 2.0 capability.

GL checks (e.g. glxinfo, glxgears produce the expected output from a
  working DRM system).

mesa-utils and mesa-utils-extra are both installed.

I can't find a work around. Perhaps there is something wrong with my
  install/upgrade?

Everything else works fine, although the graphical transitions are no
longer smooth. But it would be nice to restore the expected behavior.

Well, I just wanted to make sure this happened as early as possible,
since this is not related to what the package installs, I thought it was
better to handle this in preinst, so that this can be also just removed
at later times.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768610] Re: leftover conffile forces GNOME is software rendering

2018-06-14 Thread Treviño
Yeah, I basically did the same too, but honestly I didn't want to change
nux again with another SRU (I preferred to fix this with just one on
that side); and most importantly in a such way. As it would now include
some checks that depends on changes done in other packages, making from
my POV things even more hackish and annoy to matain and easy to be
broken.

Not that other solutions wouldn't involve the other package (say mesa)
to act on nux file, but that should be in a way that nux is not aware of
that, creating any kind of "inter-dependency" in between them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768610] Re: leftover conffile forces GNOME is software rendering

2018-06-13 Thread Treviño
On a 2nd thinking, if that nux-tools reinstall will happen after this
nux SRU landed (and of course assuming that this will be after the
"fixing-package" containing the maintainer script has ran too), since
the content of the config file will mismatch (being deleted), debhelper
will ask to reinstall a new version with the classic:

Configuration file '/etc/X11/Xsession.d/50_check_unity_support'
==> Deleted (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.

However, I'm not either a fan of having this around since it's something
the distro caused, not the user.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768610] Re: leftover conffile forces GNOME is software rendering

2018-06-13 Thread Treviño
I've playing with this a bit more to get the fix for the currently
affected users who already upgraded to bionic and removed nux-tools, but
I don't think there's a solution which works if we keep this marked as a
Conffile by dpkg.

In fact, using the various rm_conffile or just removing the file from a
maintainer script in any other package, then if the user will try to
reinstall unity (and then nux-tools), this config file won't be
reinstalled, as it's still there according to dpkg.

If anyone know a solution in how we can manipulate the dpkg status from
a maintainer script, that's the way, otherwise I've no other idea than
going back to the solution I proposed in the last night's MPs of
removing this conffile from nux-tools itself, storing it in /usr and
then symlinking it (with new name) to /etc [1] as mentioned (although
for other scenarios) in maintainers guide. So at that point any
reinstall will just work, and no purge will affect it.

PS: other *ugly* option would be instead to make this other-package
(mesa?) to replace in a maintainer script the content of this file with
the fixed one, but really I don't want to go in that way.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768610] Re: leftover conffile forces GNOME is software rendering

2018-06-13 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

GNOME shell and other 3D programs run using software rendering after
  unity removal.

This SRU covers only the upgrade case or if nux-tools removal happens
after this update, for people who already upgraded and in broken state
  another SRU will follow.

  [ Test case ]

  · Install xenial
  · Upgrade to bionic or artful
(assuming you're using a GNOME session)
  · sudo apt remove nux-tools
  · log into your session
  . From terminal:
    - printenv LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE
Should print nothing (and return an error)

Same should happen if you don't remove nux-tools but you change
`/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test` not to run properly (replace with a script
exiting 1), but you're running a GNOME session.
+
+ · If running Unity session instead, ensure that
+ printenv LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE equals 1 in case that you're running
+ in an environment with no 3d support (VMs are easy tests)

  [ Regression Potential ]

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1768610] Re: leftover conffile forces GNOME is software rendering

2018-06-13 Thread Treviño
I'm happy to do it in any package postinst, I was thinking more to keep
it somehwere under the desktop team control, as it's something we should
care about, while I prefer to have it fixed at least to anyone who has
installed ubuntu-desktop.

But I agree it's wrong also for other people using desktop under X11
(and who might have just tried unity in the past), so staying lower is
fine.

If mesa is fine to accept this, I'm happy to do it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1626935] Re: [yakkety] desktop is black and/or flickering after plugging in a second monitor

2016-10-21 Thread Treviño
I've the impression this is due to nautilus not being properly resized
when display size changes (in a VM) or a new one is added...

nautilus -q

and starting the filemanager again should fix this.
