Yup, awesome. That's the issue. Thanks for that.
I've only ever had ubuntu with this home directory so I still think the package 
needs to check the old startup and remove it if it exists.

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

After upgrading (well a new clean install) to 11.04 beta1 shortly after login 
the touchpad stops working.
Note that I've experienced the issue when both typing and when solely using the 
mouse.

If I unselect Disable touchpad while typing the problem goes away.
