[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1850931] [NEW] screen corruption after sleep mode

2019-11-01 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

When my laptop goes into sleep mode, and I log back in, the screen is
corrupted. I wanted to report with ubuntu-bug, but that doesn't open a browser
window so it doesn't report a bug.
I'll attach a screenshot of the corrupted screen. It stays corrupted until I
restart the computer. The laptop is a new Dell XPS 15 with a GEforce GTX 1650
card.
I use Ubuntu 19.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1316349] Re: screen doesn't turn off after ctrl-L manual lock

2018-01-25 Thread Xtien
I'm running 16.04 now, the bug still exists. Also, when I press ctrl-L,
the screens do go to sleep, but then after half an hour, switch back on
again and stay on for the rest of the night.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1682193] Re: Mouse acceleration significantly reduced after upgrade to 17.04

2017-06-26 Thread Xtien
As for the severity of the bug: the slower your mouse, the more you have
to move your wrist and arm to move the pointer. Moving your arm and
wrist instead of leaving your hand still on your wrist pad increases the
risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.

When I started my computer today, the login screen looked ok, but after
logging in, I saw a funny mosaic of colors. I restarted, which didn't
help. Waiting a minute did, the screen returned to normal. I'll take a

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1548259] Re: window with no content, transparent

2016-02-27 Thread Xtien
Err, well, actually, I'm so extremely happy that I have my system running with
no cpu freeze issues, I try not to reboot it at all, because sometimes when I
do, i get the cpu freeze issue. Can't afford that, I need my computer for work.
I'll think about it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-02-02 Thread Xtien
I have been working with no problems since Jan. 20. Today an Ubuntu
update wanted me to reboot, then after reboot the computer froze when I
started Android Studio. Rebooted again, same, and again. What seems to
help is when I type

IBUS_ENABLE_SYNC_MODE=1 ibus-daemon -xrd
(from here: http://tools.android.com/knownissues/ibus)

I'm not sure if this actually works, but now I disabled ibus and I have
no freeze. The issue they report is different from what I see. For now,
I'll just never reboot my computer. I hope someone is working on the
bug. If there's anything I can do, let me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-01-20 Thread Xtien
My computer hasn't frozen in over a week. I haven't rebooted, until this
morning when an Ubuntu update wanted me to reboot. Now the freeze issue
is back, seemingly worse than before. 3 reboots didn't change this.

I noted that in "System Monitor", CPU2 gets stuck at 100%. However, when
I type "top" in a shell, total cpu use is under 3%.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-01-20 Thread Xtien
Today I tried the daily build of Ubuntu 16.04, from a live cd usb.
Nouveau worked fine, but I can't seem to run Android Studio on a live
cd, so I couldn't test the freeze issue. There was a problem with java.
Maybe I should create a live cd usb with a large disk space, so I can
install java and as on that. I tried to run android studio from the
harddisk, that I had mounted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-01-14 Thread Xtien
I tested Nouveau with the standard iso from the ubuntu site. Should I
test with the daily build?

Currently, I don't have any issues, after rebooting after testing with Nouveau.
I hesitate to test right now, I'd like to get some work done first, I"m afraid
that rebooting will give me freezes again.
I'll see what I can do with testing nouveau from a daily build.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-01-12 Thread Xtien
Nouveau makes it worse. When I start Android Studio, Firefox immediately grays
out, AS stops loading before it even opens a window. Then the computer remains
frozen, until I stop java processes in a shell.
Also, I don't see how a graphics issue can make CPU2 or CPU3 hang, but never
one of the other CPUs.

It can't be just a bug in Android Studio, because AS should not be
capable of hanging up my computer. Also, it can't be just a bug in
Ubuntu or in the bios or cpu, because it only happens with Android
Studio (except once in gedit and once in a shell). I suspect AS does
something other software doesn't do, which triggers a glitch elsewhere.

Yesterday night, I ran Prime95 software to calculate Mersenne prime numbers.
This kept my cpus at 500% with low priority processes. All software would still
run normally, not slower, but AS wouldn't run. It pushed prime to using over
600%, which is weird, and it wouldn't start, just hang until killed.
I tried Prime95 because they found a glitch in Intel Skylake cpus. My cpu is
5th generation, not Skylake.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-01-11 Thread Xtien
Oh, I'm sorry. A while ago I re-opened a bug, then I was told I should
file a separate bug instead. Never mind.

I haven't tried this particular bug with nouveau. The reason I use
Nvidia drivers is that I couldn't get my system to work with nouveau. I
used to use nouveau until about a year ago. If you want me to try, I can
try. In my experience it's a lot of work, especially if screens don't
work after restart with nouveau.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-01-11 Thread Xtien
Fyi, the bug didn't occur between the first boot with the new bios, and
the first reboot after that. I rebooted just to see if that wouldn't
bring back the bug. I usually don't reboot that often. I checked the
overclock rate, it's at "no overclock" (i.e. 100%).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1532901] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2016-01-11 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

10 minutes after bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1531845 was closed, it
happened again. CPU3 went to 100%, Firefox grayed out (I was watching tv in
firefox while building a project in Android Studio) until I typed "killall -9
java".
Apparently, upgrading my bios to 1.8 didn't help.

While one cpu was taking 100% permanently, "top" showed Xorg at ~40% and
nothing else being active.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-01-11 Thread Xtien
After the bios upgrade to 1.8, I have had not a single crash. I rebooted my
computer, did everything I could to reproduce the crash, but it didn't happen.
I can actually get some work done now. I'm a happy person.
I think it's ok to close the bug.

Christopher,

you're a darling!

I updated the bios to 1.8, and I managed to build my project in Android
Studio a number of times without any freezes. That's more than I've been
able to do in the last four or so months. As I have thought the problem
had gone before, can we keep the bug open for another few days? I'll let
you know, soon as I went through 48 hours without a "100% cpu freeze",
you can close the bug.
I'm really happy.

Where can I send the flowers? (in Amsterdam, that's what you send people
when you're grateful).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1500474] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2015-09-28 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

My computer freezes randomly a couple of times a day. Sometimes I can log in
using ssh from another computer, do a shutdown -r, but that then hangs also.
What I've experienced in the last hour is that the computer slowed down and
stopped, I had an ssh shell window open on another cocmputer, showing "top". I
noticed Xorg took up to 17% of CPU, later up to 26%. I had Eclipse open, and
Android Studio, both frozen. From the other computer I stopped Eclipse, AS
still frozen. Half an hour later, AS unfroze. Xorg still 16% cpu. I used
ubuntu-bug from the shell window, but somehow it didn't get through in Lynx.
Right now, the computer mostly unfroze.

I have experienced Chrome freezes. There's a bug registered for that,
I'll add info after I hit enter, before this computer freezes again. I
have replaced graphics card (same model), motherboard, cpu, memory.
Orderd new power supply and new model graphics card.

Also, I have issues typing the disk decription password, there's a bug
report for that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1477649] Re: Xorg freeze

I switched the video driver from Nouveau to Nvidia proprietary driver.
Now I can watch youtube in Chrome. I do have other issues now, described
in bug 1404169.

2015-09-21 Thread Xtien
Unfortunately, Chrome still crashes, with blinking numlock and capslock.

During startup, I see "Failed to load kernel modules" at least three
times.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1477649] Re: Xorg freeze

2015-09-21 Thread Xtien
Can we reopen this? My computer continues to freeze frequently. I have
replaced the motherboard, memory, cpu, it still freezes. I have replaced
the videocard with one of the same model, still freezes. Happens mostly
when I watch a video, beit online or from my action cam. I don't use
Chrome any more, I use firefox. But even without ff, watching a video
from my camera makes the computer freeze in much the same way. I have
ordered a new video card, a different (newer) model, but I'm starting to
doubt that will solve the issue.

I'm sorry about that. Had I known I would have kept the motherboard for
a few days. But it broke, computer became more or less unusable.

It seems to be related to this Chrome issue:

I don't know if Chrome messing with the GPU should stop Ubuntu?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1477649] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2015-07-23 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

What happens is the following: Thunderbird is open, Google Chrome is
open, computer freezes. I can move the mouse pointer, but I can't click,
keyboard doesn't respond. I can't even use ctr-sh-F2 to get a shell to
reboot the computer. Linus is still running, I can login via a shell on
another computer and execute a shutdown -r now to reboot the computer.

The freeze specifically seems to happen when I click this link in Thunderbird,
with Chrome as default browser:
http://www.dhl-tracknet.nl/cgi-bin-al/UFA100/NL/?type=UzoekVeld=JVGL058180002261

Today the computer froze when I clicked the link, yesterday it froze
twice when this page was open in Chrome. I first thought the issue is
Chrome related, but whatever Chrome does, it should not be able to
totally freeze my computer.

2015-07-23 Thread Xtien
I stand corrected: it's not that particular link, it's any link. I was
using Chrome, went fine, until I clicked a link, immediately computer
froze. I'll ditch Chrome, but still, Ubuntu shouldn't freeze.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1384352] [NEW] screen doesn't go to sleep

2014-10-22 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

I have set settings to screen sleeps after 30 minutes. But it doesn't.
I got up last night to switch the screens off because the light was
bothering me. A while ago, I reported a bug that screen wouldn't sleep
after ctrl-L while it would sleep otherwise. Now it's the other way
round.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1338715] [NEW] Snapping windows get enabled automatically sometimes

2014-07-07 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

Every once in a while, the windows edges get sticky. In combination with
Wobbly Windows, this gives an annoying behavior. The setting for snappy
windows in compiz is off (stays of), and sticky edges in system
settings/display are off and stay off. I resolve the issue by fooling
around with these settings and by switching wobbly windows off and on
again. But the edges should not get sticky by themselves, should they?

It may be related to Google Chrome. I noticed strange behavior of Chrome
when this happened just a minute ago, like the Chrome window flickering
and turning on and off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1274109] [NEW] compiz snapping windows make some windows go bad

2014-01-29 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

I really dislike the windows snapping to the edges of the screen. So I
deactivated snapping windows in compiz config settings manager. But this
made Chrome disappear, I had to kill chrome before I could restart it,
but then again it went bad. In my Eclipse window, the window resize
buttons disappeared. activating snapping windows solved the issues.

But I really dislike windows snapping to the edges.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 928794] [NEW] wrong window size in update manager so I can't see or click the ok button

2012-02-08 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

I run ubuntu on an MSI Wind with a small screen. Ubuntu update manager
suggests I update packages, but the window it uses is larger than my
screen. What's worse, the window is not resizable. I can't see the 'OK
button. I assumed that if I just press enter, update manager would
continue, but it doesn't.

Solution: make update manager's window resizable, or put buttons in a
place where I can see them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565878] Re: [i945gme] cursor pointer selection gives me different pointer than what I selected

2011-10-12 Thread Xtien
*bump*
The cursor seems to get worse. Where a few months ago I had a cursor that
sometimes would show as a lefty crystal cursor, today that doesn't happen any
more. It is exclusively righthanded. Until 18 months ago, I had a nice
lefthanded cursor. I use ubuntu classic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 826240] Re: windows lose edges

This still happens. Every couple of days, I need to disable and enable
window decoration in compiz. It's annoying.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 853776] [NEW] can't scroll in some windows

2011-09-19 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

When I select startup apps from system/preferences, and I go to /usr/bin, I
need to scroll down. there's a scroll pointer that's very narrow and orange.
When I touch it with my mouse pointer, a bigger scroll handle is displayed next
to it. However, when I move there with my mouse pointer, it disappears before I
can grab it. I can't scroll with my mouse.
This started after I updated to natty. I use ubuntu classic.

This scroll thing is annoying anyway, because more often than not, I
have to move my mouse pointer around the scroll thing in order to
scroll. Also, very often when I want to resize a window, the scroll
thing shows up, hiding the resize edge.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 826240] [NEW] windows lose edges

2011-08-14 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

Every once in a while, the windows do not have a border after ubuntu
startup, which means I can't resize or move windows, which is very very
annoying. Sometimes I can fix it by going to compiz config, add 'windows
decoration', remove it again, repeat the steps, then sometimes the
windows borders come back. Ubuntu is unusable if you can't move or
resize windows.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 818862] [NEW] no screen when removing external monitor

2011-07-31 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

I use an additional monitor with my asus laptop. This works fine, except for
the following. I have 11.04 with gnome (ubuntu classic)
1. when I turn my computer on with the monitor attached, I get a black screen
on the laptop and an empty background - no menu bar- on the external screen.
all I can do is reboot the computer with the on/off swicth. I have to boot the
computer without the extra monitor, then plug it in after boot.
2. When I don't use the external monitor, I can use the laptop until it goes to
sleep mode. After that happens, it's dead. All I can do is hit the on/off
switch. So I have to make sure it never goes to sleep mode.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 818862] Re: no screen when removing external monitor

2011-07-31 Thread Xtien
btw, I'd like to go back to using the Nvidia proprietary driver, but
that doesn't install, it complains about a Nouveau driver that should
be uninstalled. So far, I haven't managed to do so.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 816437] [NEW] screen and window parts are missing

2011-07-26 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

The example is from Eclipse, it shows that I really can't use eclipse.
The same happens in other apps, in the menu bar (icons appear when I
hover the mouse over them, background remains invisible), and in the
desktop background. Very annoying.

What actually happens, after installing the update, is that when I press
reply on a message in my inbox, all address fields except the first
aren't visible. Most of the reply screen is just white, no details.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 775112] [NEW] mouse pointer change doesn't work

2011-05-01 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

As I'm left handed, I use alternative pointers, the CrystalCursor
whiteleft pointers. In 10.04 these worked well, in 10.10 they worked
sometimes (I reported that on launchpad), but in 11.04 they don't work
at all. I have to work with the right handed pointer, which is
confusing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565878] [NEW] cursor pointer selection gives me different pointer than what I selected

2010-04-18 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have installed CrystalCursors because I want a lefthanded cursor.
This worked fine in 9.10. Now, in the browser I have the lefthanded
cursor that I selected, but in the browser bar and in the rest of the
system, I have a blue righthanded cursor. I saved the custom setting as
a separate profile.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565878] Re: cursor pointer selection gives me different pointer than what I selected

2010-04-18 Thread Xtien
The changes between the two cursors to me are random, but consistent. In
the browser it's white, but in the preferences window of the browser
it's blue. But then when I select When firefox starts and the dropbox
appears, in the dropbox it's white again. After hovering over the
dropbox, it gets white and stays white, except in the title bar of the
preferences window.

white refers to the pointer I have selected, blue refers to the
wrong pointer.

It would actually be nice to have a lefty pointer in the default setup,
but that's another matter.

Thanks. I had searched for the bug but I didn't find 415023, probably
because I didn't use the right keywords.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486299] [NEW] MSI Wind screen flickers after startup after upgading to 9.10

2009-11-21 Thread Xtien
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Since I upgraded to Karmic Koala, my MSI Wind laptop screen keeps
flickering after startup. There's a brightness slider in the top right,
so I suppose it's trying to adjust the brightness of the screen and it
can't decide between 80% or 90% so it keeps changing between the two.
This lasts for a couple of minutes, then it stops flickering.
