[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402975] Re: system freezes and reboots during app startup

2009-08-04 Thread andrehe
A correction: The freeze does happen on nVidia Quadro NVS 290 (NV86),
but not on nVidia Quadro FX1500 (NV71GL). So it is a bug affecting only
newer nVidia hardware. I do not know if it happens on Ubuntu 64 Bit,
too. It should be patched as soon as possible.

nVidia is not able to provide Ubuntu packages at the moment:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490

"
Please note: unfortunately, it has become difficult to keep track of the
pre-/post-installation steps required for [K]Ubuntu, and the above instructions
may be incomplete. If in doubt, it is recommended that you use your
distributor's NVIDIA Linux graphics driver packages, exclusively.
"

Maybe it helps to get into touch with them, or to offer distribution updates
more quickly.
nVidia offers a package repository for openSUSE, but not yet for Ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402975] Re: system freezes and reboots during app startup

2009-08-04 Thread andrehe
The freeze does only happen on Ubuntu 9.04 32 Bit. The 64 Bit variant is
not affected.

Anyway, it would help to accelerate the driver update process. For
openSUSE, nVidia provides a package repository. Although nVidia updates
even to the 185 series which is not quite stable. I would prefer that
nVidia took care of providing Ubuntu update packages separated for
series 180, 185, 190, etc. so for example if nVidia publishes 180.60,
the next day all Ubuntu systems can be patched. If someone wants to
migrate to another series, an upgrade package should be provided as well
which lets the user track the newer series. Jockey already offers to
install different series, only timely incremental upgrades are missing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402975] Re: system freezes and reboots during app startup

2009-07-23 Thread andrehe
I manually installed the nVidia driver 180.60 (NVIDIA-
Linux-x86-180.60-pkg1.run). This driver resolves the issue!!!

The driver 180.60 is part of the 180 series and only an incremental (but
important) update. Please provide an update package for Ubuntu 9.04
(jaunty).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402975] [NEW] system freezes and reboots during app startup

2009-07-22 Thread andrehe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-180-kernel-source

1)
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

32 Bit

2)
nvidia-180-kernel-source:
  Installed: 180.44-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 180.44-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 180.44-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/restricted Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3)
I expect the application to start up without a problem and the window to popup
offering a graphical user interface.
Details:
The application which exhibits this behavior is from the static code analyzer
package Mathworks PolySpace R2009b (C/C++, V3) prerelease. Starting the viewer
/usr/local/PolySpace/PolySpace_Common/Viewer/bin/polyspace-viewer first shows a
loading dialog, and when the progress bar reaches the right end, a window with
the GUI is rendered. The application is written in JAVA.

4)
Just when the progress bar of the loading dialog reaches the end and the window
with the GUI is imminent to open, the mouse pointer freezes and after one
minute the system reboots.
The freeze does not happen with the Open Source nv driver. Maybe an update of
the nVidia driver package to a more recent version helps.
With the older nVidia 173.14.16 driver (offered by jockey), there is no system
freeze, but the GUI is not rendered correctly: the window is filled with one
color but hovering the mouse over the window shows that the GUI dialog elements
are there, just not visible.

** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
