[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.
** Description changed: + [ Impact ] + In some platforms with specific Nvidia drivers, auto-login will fail due to the old vt-handoff patch in grub2. + + [ Test Case ] + 1. Boot ubuntu into desktop environment. + 2. Enabled auto login in System->Users + 3. Reboot the system + + [Expected result] + System will boot into desktop environment without the login page. + + [Actual result] + System boots to login page, and can't login to desktop environment with the correct password. + + [ Regression potential ] + Low, the patch just removes vt.handoff part in grub2 package, and I can't find any regression in several runs of stress tests. + + --- + I just updated to the Ubuntu 19.10 beta. After boot, I'm shown the GDM login screen (which I shouldn't; I have auto login enabled), and logging in just takes me back to the same user selection screen even though the password is correct. If I switch to a TTY and run `sudo pkill gnome-session-binary`, logging in through GDM starts working again. I should add that the do-release-upgrade was rocky; I did it in a terminal from within gnome, went away for a while, and when I returned, I just saw an Ubuntu 19.10 in a TTY. I was able to do `sudo dpkg --configure -a` and complete the upgrade, but I don't know if something's still messed up due to that. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943880] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in __libc_message() from malloc_printerr() via XIDestroyDeviceProperty
I worked around this bug in the end by adding the following script into /etc/pm/sleep.d directory. I created this script in July, and have never seen the problem recur since. I'm using an Acer 1810tz laptop. #! /bin/sh rfkills=$(ls /sys/class/rfkill) #echo $rfkills case $1 in suspend|suspend_hybrid|hibernate) rmmod psmouse for rfkill in ${rfkills}; do echo 0 /sys/class/rfkill/$rfkill/state sleep 1 done; ;; resume|thaw) modprobe psmouse for rfkill in ${rfkills}; do name=$(cat /sys/class/rfkill/$rfkill/name) if [ $name = phy0 ]; then echo 1 /sys/class/rfkill/$rfkill/state fi; sleep 1 done; ;; esac On 11/23/12, gna 943...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote: I was curious about the dialog i receive often about some internal error after startup, or while using the system, and looked at the details. After that i found this bug. The fact that in the last comments the touchpad is mentioned, and the base report is loenovo x220 related, I can only provide a litte bit as addition: Current system with the latest updates: Linux x220i 3.2.0-34-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Thu Nov 15 10:48:16 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The synaptics package is: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.6.2-1ubuntu1~precise2 The syndaemon is running with params: syndaemon -i 2.0 -K -R -t And the most important info, i have totally disabled my touchpad for 5 months at least , because i am full satisfied with the trackpoint since i used it with IBM thinkpads for decades. So the touchpad is disabled at boot every time. Do i need the syndaemon if i never want to use the touchpad? That would be at least for only me(!) a possible workaround. I also think the crash notification comes more frequently after i use an external monitor and disconnect it (before or after shutdown does not matter), and boot next time without the external monitor. I hope this helps. -- You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/943880 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in __libc_message() from malloc_printerr() via XIDestroyDeviceProperty Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “xorg-server” source package in Precise: Confirmed Bug description: #2 0xb71de835 in __GI_abort () at abort.c:91 save_stage = 2 act = {__sigaction_handler = {sa_handler = 0x407, sa_sigaction = 0x407}, sa_mask = {__val = {3075852732, 3075864776, 6, 8, 3217292836, 3072910926, 0, 0, 3072250189, 3073691636, 3073691636, 11, 3217294372, 3073032746, 2, 3217292836, 8, 0, 3217295596, 0, 7, 0, 5, 3217292940, 3217292932, 8, 3073420904, 3073420908, 3075850240, 2, 3076003257, 3}}, sa_flags = 4, sa_restorer = 0xb730893f} sigs = {__val = {32, 0 repeats 31 times}} #3 0xb7214f9a in __libc_message (do_abort=2, fmt=0xb730cf3c *** glibc detected *** %s: %s: 0x%s ***\n) at ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/libc_fatal.c:201 ap = 0xb6eee000 ap_copy = 0xb6eee000 fd = 2 on_2 = optimized out list = optimized out nlist = optimized out cp = optimized out written = optimized out #4 0xb721fae2 in malloc_printerr (action=optimized out, str=optimized out, ptr=0xb98da700) at malloc.c:5007 buf = b98da700 cp = optimized out #5 0xb767bd1b in XIDestroyDeviceProperty (prop=0xb98da700) at ../../Xi/xiproperty.c:631 No locals. #6 0xb767c2a4 in XIDeleteAllDeviceProperties (device=0xb98d7c18) at ../../Xi/xiproperty.c:648 prop = 0xb98da700 next = 0xb98d8360 curr_handler = optimized out next_handler = optimized out #7 0xb7587b2d in CloseDevice (dev=0xb98d7c18) at ../../dix/devices.c:919 screen = 0xb947d6d0 classes = optimized out j = optimized out #8 0xb758c0dd in RemoveDevice (dev=0xb98d7c18, sendevent=1 '\001') at ../../dix/devices.c:1117 prev = optimized out tmp = 0xb98d7c18 next = 0xb98cbe18 ret = optimized out screen = optimized out deviceid = 11 initialized = 1 flags = {0 repeats 11 times, 8, 0 repeats 28 times} ProblemType: Crash DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-17.27-generic-pae 3.2.6 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-17-generic-pae i686 .tmp.unity.support.test.0: ApportVersion: 1.93-0ubuntu2 Architecture: i386 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: compiz Date: Wed Feb 29 14:49:40 2012 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: precise DistroVariant: ubuntu ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/Xorg ExtraDebuggingInterest: No
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1003924] Re: HD Streaming Does Not Work in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
apport information ** Description changed: Streaming of high definition audio/video does not work in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It worked fine in Ubuntu 11.10 and 11.04. I am using the HDHomeRun Prime HDTV tuner, (with application HDHomeRun Config GUI), which was able to stream HDTV to my computer perfectly in Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10. A computer I have that still has 11.10 installed still works perfectly. After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, the HDTV streaming no longer functions. Audio breaks up and is unintelligible, and video stutters. This problem exists on three different computers running 12.04 LTS, so it is not isolated to a particular computer hardware issue. Switching to a standard definition (SD) stream, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS works fine. It appears that for some reason 12.04 LTS is not able to handle the higher bitrate of HD streaming. I have seen similar error reports using other applications and hardware. It would be helpful to track down and fix the bug because it is likely to affect more users as 12.04 LTS gains wider use. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1003924] Re: HD Streaming Does Not Work in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 possible-manual-nvidia- install ubuntu ** Description changed: Streaming of high definition audio/video does not work in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. - It would be helpful to track down and fix the bug because it is likely - to affect more users as 12.04 LTS gains wider use. Thanks. + It would be helpful to track down and fix the bug because it is likely to affect more users as 12.04 LTS gains wider use. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943880] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in __libc_message() from malloc_printerr() via XIDestroyDeviceProperty
Hi Maarten, I installed the synaptics driver, and rebooted into the standard kernel, and the standard kernel was really unstable so I rebooted back into mainstream kernel. I'm a bit concerned about the security implications of running an old mainstream kernel, but at least the mainstream kernel is stable. I'm using the same synaptics driver in both by the way, since it's the same system, and my touchpad works fine in mainstream. Perhaps there is something in one of the modules that is part of the Ubuntu kernel that is not included in the mainstream kernel that is causing issues? For example, in the mainstream kernel, I can't run vmware, and there is no ipv6, and app-armor support is significantly reduced, and I imagine there are some other modules in the Ubuntu kernel that are not part of the mainstream kernel? Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943880] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in __libc_message() from malloc_printerr() via XIDestroyDeviceProperty
In case it's useful in any way, I've started using the mainstream kernel 3.4.0-030400rc2-generic-pae #201204072235 , which doesn't have the psmouse-working-after-suspend bug I get in the ubuntu kernel, and therefore I don't get a crash. But I suspect this is because I don't have to unload psmouse, rather than because the xorg crash doesn't exist in this kernel. This kernel sucks because I cant run VMWare, but it's better than crashing after every 3rd suspend... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/943880 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in __libc_message() from malloc_printerr() via XIDestroyDeviceProperty To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/943880/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570151] Re: mouse stuck jumping between screens
My system has 2 graphics cards and 3 screens. The cursor gets stuck between screens (either pair) several times a day. It only started happening after I upgraded to Lucid. It is beyond annoying to have to reboot the system several times a day. I don't know what they did, but I can't believe that the Ubuntu product is prepared to screw all it's users with multiple screen systems like this - hello - this deserves a critical status and a fix pronto. It renders the system so dysfunctional that there is no point in investing any more of my time in this fork of Linux. And I liked Ubuntu and was recommending it to folks. That's not possible any more. The problem can be reduced by not loitering with your mouse at the divide between screens. But the minute you do - bam! Your system halts. It is unacceptable that this bug has no evident priority attached to it. I'm also running another system with 2 cards and 5 screens. It's still on 9.10 and works fine. There is no way it is going to be upgraded until this bug is fixed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570151 Title: mouse stuck jumping between screens To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/570151/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 210780] Re: MTRRs set up incorrectly with 4GB RAM - X slow
@Nigel: Your BIOS has chosen to set up the MTRRs in a way that cannot be fixed by the kernel (or mtrr-uncover) without changing the memory caching ranges. The BIOS uses overlapping ranges. That won't work when the system wants to change uncachable to write-combining for an X driver. The kernel (and mtrr-uncover) try to set up equivalent non-overlapping ranges. mtrr-uncover says that to do this it needs more MTRRs than the architecture has. Newer X drivers don't use MTRRs to do that change. I don't remember what the rules are for the newer PAT mechanism. It may be that the problem no longer matters. I tried to explain much of this in the mtrr-uncover documentation. 1) you could ignore this and hope that performance isn't impacted. You could even test this (perhaps by ditching some RAM) 2) you could figure out another MTRR layout that would work. You would have to figure out if the uncachable range could be made simpler (larger) without breaking anything. Then 8 MTRRs should be enough. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/210780 Title: MTRRs set up incorrectly with 4GB RAM - X slow ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 481819] Re: [i945gm] external monitor hotkey breaks gnome-display-properties, changes theme
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev I have a Lenovo X60 with an external docking station, and an external monitor attached. When I dock the laptop, and press Fn+f7 to activate the external monitor, the following happens: 1. My gnome theme is changed from DarkRoom to (I guess?) the standard theme. 2. The monitor is activated with the laptop screen set up to the left of the external monitor. 3. Using gnome-display-properties or xrandr to change the layout, does nothing and gives no error message. 4. After logging out and in again, my gnome theme comes back to DarkRoom and gnome-display-properties works OK. 1. and 3. are the problem.
