[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432531] Re: Unknown/unaccounted memory leak
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: I have HP ProBook 4310s loaded with Linux Mint 7 Gloria (Jaunty 9.04) with all the latest updates and ATI Proprietary driver (for ATI Mobility Radeon 4330). I am currently having some weird memory leak issue. Basically, the total memory usage from `free -m` or gnome-system-monitor doesn't tally with the sum of all processes' memory. The difference is a lot, from 100mb to 1gb. It kept on growing out of no where. I have attached the screenshots of top and free. + --- + Architecture: i386 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 + DkmsStatus: + fglrx, 8.723.1, 2.6.32-21-generic-pae, i686: built + fglrx, 8.723.1, 2.6.32-22-generic-pae, i686: installed + InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala - Release i386 (20091028.5) + MachineType: Hewlett-Packard HP ProBook 4310s + NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx + Package: fglrx-installer (not installed) + ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic-pae root=UUID=44c7c661-1f5e-49e6-a14e-7a35f1ec3f9f ro quiet splash + ProcEnviron: + LANGUAGE= + PATH=(custom, user) + LANG=en_GB.utf8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.33-generic-pae 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 + Tags: lucid lucid + Uname: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic-pae i686 + UserGroups: adm admin cdrom dialout lpadmin plugdev sambashare + dmi.bios.date: 01/14/2010 + dmi.bios.vendor: Hewlett-Packard + dmi.bios.version: 68PHT Ver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568988] Re: [Lucid][Ubuntu 10.04][ATI cards] Slow/freeze windows management (resize, maximise, .etc) with fglrx driver + compositing desktop.
It was suggested by Bryce Harrington that we create a fresh bug report because of the comment limit and dangling workaround instructions in the 400+ comments. Please don't mark it as a duplicate of #351186. Quote Bryce Harrington. Finally, I notice that the #comments has now exceeded what launchpad can handle, so the bug comments can no longer be displayed in the web interface. That's a shame. If I were you guys, I'd close out this bug report and replace it with a fresh one, that has a clear write up for a description, the current patch attached, the PPA as a workaround, and steps to rebuild xserver to include the patch. ** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 351186 [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] [ubuntu 9.10] [ubuntu 10.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled -- [Lucid][Ubuntu 10.04][ATI cards] Slow/freeze windows management (resize, maximise, .etc) with fglrx driver + compositing desktop. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568988 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

It is because you updated the xserver-xorg package. Anyway, if you guys can trust me enough, I have built the lastest xserver package with backclear patch. Having a rather busy workload from college, so I don't bother about creating a ppa and stuff. I built for local system use so it is repo friendly. Meaning if k0ekk0ek updated his repo, his package will override mine. xserver-common_1.6.4-2ubuntu4.2local1_all.deb and xserver-xorg-core_1.6.4-2ubuntu4.2local1_i386.deb http://www.mediafire.com/?mo5i0zw0ynt http://www.mediafire.com/?ozmtjmgdqdd Cheers, -- [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] [ubuntu 9.10] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] [ubuntu 9.10] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
@7oby You can use Synaptic to Force Version and Lock Version when select a pacakge and click on the Package tab on the menu bar. @svaens $ fglrxinfo #then check the openGL version string. $ dmesg | grep '\[fglrx\] module' [ 15.250843] [fglrx] module loaded - fglrx 8.66.10 [Sep 3 2009] with 1 minors Since AMD release monthly driver, Sep 3 2009 driver is 9.10. Then October is 9.11, November is 9.12. December is Christmas, January driver hasn't out yet and it will be 10.1 cos it is a new year. Anyway, I have compile a deb with backclear patch by Felix, not the no- backfill patch though. You can grab it here http://www.mediafire.com/?hmyrk0yqqz4 , Sorry, I don't have a PPA yet. Memory leak are present on all patches and non-patched version, workaround by @Vancouverite is off PowerPlay before shutdown and on PowerPlay after login. Or disable Powerplay all together, but the card will get very hot though. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446349] [NEW] [Mobility Radeon HD 4330] KWIN/Compiz RAM usage
Public bug reported: fglrx version that I tried: - fglrx-8.600 - fglrx-8.620 - fglrx-8.650 (Catalyst 9.9 - binary from AMD ATI) - Current The current situation I am experiencing is with compositing enabled in KWIN/Compiz, the system physical memory usage was sometime 500MB RAM higher than a normal expected behaviours. Does KWIN/Compiz actually use up all the texture (512 VRAM) that it needs to borrow 500MB more from Physical RAM even though I don't run any extensive graphic rendering apps? Maybe fglrx (or my graphic card) doesn't always use SIDEPORT but mostly use UMA (which is ridiculous and undesirable since I have 512 MB of discrete VRAM). There is no option to change in BIOS as well. Same set of running applications (KATE, firefox, pidgin, dolphin) with compositing enabled on different boot. * Expected behaviour: X MB of RAM. * Exhibited behaviour: sometimes X MB of RAM, sometimes X+500 MB of RAM (majority of the times).
