[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432531] Re: Unknown/unaccounted memory leak

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I have HP ProBook 4310s loaded with Linux Mint 7 Gloria (Jaunty 9.04)
with all the latest updates and ATI Proprietary driver (for ATI Mobility
  Radeon 4330).

I am currently having some weird memory leak issue. Basically, the total
memory usage from `free -m` or gnome-system-monitor doesn't tally with
the sum of all processes' memory. The difference is a lot, from 100mb to
1gb. It kept on growing out of no where.

I have attached the screenshots of top and free.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568988] Re: [Lucid][Ubuntu 10.04][ATI cards] Slow/freeze windows management (resize, maximise, .etc) with fglrx driver + compositing desktop.

2010-04-30 Thread idyllic
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: fglrx

  [Environment]
  * You are using fglrx restricted driver from Ubuntu repository or download
the linux driver from AMD ATI website (fglrx version = 8.723.1-0ubuntu3).
  * If your ATI card is listed in the following pdf, then your desktop
behaviours will most likely be affected the 'bugs' listed in [Symptoms] section.

https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/catalyst_102_linux.pdf
  * GNOME and KDE SC 4.
  * Compositing desktop is enabled (Compiz and KWIN).

-
  [Symptoms]
  * Window Management: Unminimizing, Maximising, Full-Screening, Resizing
windows and Switching windows (Alt+Tab) will noticably freeze the screen for
about 1 second plus. Your mileage might vary.
  * Memory (RAM) Management: Secondary problem you might notice is memory leak
and/or memory-clearing problem
(http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21471).
-

  [Workarounds]
  * Window Management:
   - Using PPA (Lucid Only) by Bryce Harrington (not up-to-date as of time of
writing)
     PPA address @ https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/violet
In terminal, 'sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bryceharrington/violet' then
install the update and reboot.
+
+Other PPAs:
+ + Alf Gaida (Lucid):
https://launchpad.net/~info-g-com/+archive/xserver-xorg-1.7.6-gc
+'sudo add-apt-repository ppa:info-g-com/xserver-xorg-1.7.6-gc'
+
+
   - Compile your own packages - when the ppa is not updated fast enough (or
you are an update-freak like me)
+ You need to tick 'Source Code' option in Synaptic Repositories or add
relevant source code repo (deb-src) if you are using
ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates.
     + Building instruction:
     sudo apt-get build-dep xorg-server
     sudo apt-get install devscripts
     apt-get source xorg-server
     cd xorg-server-*
     wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/45103003/xserver-xorg-backclear.patch
     patch -p1 xserver-xorg-backclear.patch
     dch -l local 'Backclear Patch'
     debuild -us -uc
     cd ..
     sudo dpkg --install xserver-xorg-core*.deb
     sudo dpkg --install xserver-common*.deb

  * Memory (RAM) Management:
   - In terminal, run 'glxinfo' command or invoke 'glxgears' to release the
'uncleared' memory. You might need 'mesa-utils' package installed.
   - Create a bash script to run at start up
     #!/bin/sh
     while [ 1 ]
     do
   glxinfo
   sleep 60
     done

-
[My Suggested Comment Guidelines - subjected to change]
  * Keep it civil.
  * Subscribe to the bug and click on the (!) icon on top 'This bug affects you
and x other people' instead of comment like 'it affects me too'.
  * Help test the patch for potential regression as requested by Bryce
Harrington:
   A. What we need is solid proof of the following:

  1. No visible regression on -intel with compiz turned on
  2. No visible regression on -ati with compiz turned on
  3. No visible regression on -nouveau with compiz turned on
  4. No visible regression on -nvidia with compiz turned on
  5. No visible regression on at least one video driver with kde kwin
desktop effects turned on.

Alternatively, I could accept either of the following:

    B. Rejigger the patch so its logic is only enabled when the fglrx
  driver is loaded

    C. Forward the patch upstream to Debian or bugs.freedesktop.org and get it
accepted into the upstream xserver, from which we can pull a cherrypick patch.

I tested again with the instruction. It works fine.

h...@halcyon:~/Forge/xorg/xorg-server-1.7.6$ patch -p1
xserver-xorg-backclear.patch
patching file composite/compalloc.c
Hunk #1 succeeded at 486 (offset 3 lines)

I suggest you redownload the source-file. Then apply the patch again.
Remember to go into the xorg-server-* directory first then wget the
patch and lastly apply it.

2. No visible regression on -ati with compiz turned on
3. No visible regression on -nouveau with compiz turned on
4. No visible regression on -nvidia with compiz turned on
5. No visible regression on at least one video driver with kde kwin desktop
effects turned on.

2010-04-23 Thread idyllic
It was suggested by Bryce Harrington that we create a fresh bug report
because of the comment limit and dangling workaround instructions in the
400+ comments. Please don't mark it as a duplicate of #351186.

Quote Bryce Harrington.
Finally, I notice that the #comments has now exceeded what launchpad can
handle, so the bug comments can no longer be displayed in the web interface.
That's a shame. If I were you guys, I'd close out this bug report and replace it
with a fresh one, that has a clear write up for a description, the current
patch attached, the PPA as a workaround, and steps to rebuild xserver to
include the patch.

It is because you updated the xserver-xorg package.

Anyway, if you guys can trust me enough, I have built the lastest xserver
package with backclear patch. Having a rather busy workload from college, so I
don't bother about creating a ppa and stuff. I built for local system use so it
is repo friendly. Meaning if k0ekk0ek updated his repo, his package will
override mine.
xserver-common_1.6.4-2ubuntu4.2local1_all.deb and
xserver-xorg-core_1.6.4-2ubuntu4.2local1_i386.deb

You can use Synaptic to Force Version and Lock Version when select a pacakge
and click on the Package tab on the menu bar.

will get very hot though.

Cheers all.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446349] [NEW] [Mobility Radeon HD 4330] KWIN/Compiz RAM usage

2009-10-08 Thread idyllic
Public bug reported:

fglrx version that I tried:
- fglrx-8.600
- fglrx-8.620
- fglrx-8.650 (Catalyst 9.9 - binary from AMD ATI) - Current

The current situation I am experiencing is with compositing enabled in
KWIN/Compiz, the system physical memory usage was sometime 500MB RAM
higher than a normal expected behaviours. Does KWIN/Compiz actually use
up all the texture (512 VRAM) that it needs to borrow 500MB more from
Physical RAM even though I don't run any extensive graphic rendering
apps? Maybe fglrx (or my graphic card) doesn't always use SIDEPORT but
mostly use UMA (which is ridiculous and undesirable since I have 512 MB
of discrete VRAM). There is no option to change in BIOS as well.

Same set of running applications (KATE, firefox, pidgin, dolphin) with
compositing enabled on different boot.
* Expected behaviour: X MB of RAM.
* Exhibited behaviour: sometimes X MB of RAM, sometimes X+500 MB of RAM
(majority of the times).

My current laptop specifications HP Probook 4310s are as follow
- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 (512 VRAM).
- 3GB DDR3 RAM.
- KDE 4.3.2 with KWIN and default config.
- Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 + nobackfill patch + binary Catalyst 9.9.
