[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1668428] Re: gnome screen shot behaves strange on zesty unity8

2017-03-20 Thread kevin gunn
retested, overhauled description based on the latest findings (at least
I no longer see the u8 lockup now)

** Summary changed:

- gnome screen shot full lock up on zesty unity8
+ gnome screen shot behaves strange on zesty unity8

** Changed in: canonical-devices-system-image
   Status: Incomplete => New

** Changed in: gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => New

** No longer affects: unity8 (Ubuntu)

** Also affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => High

** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => High

** Description changed:

- Feb 27 iso build of zesty, clean u8 exploration
+ Updated Mar 20 zesty, clean u8 exploration

- gnome screenshot completely locks up the shell and eventually unity8 just
restarts
+ gnome screenshot will seemingly quit, and will not capture the desired screen
  to repro:
  1) launch screenshot app from the app drawer
  2) make indications to take a screenshot ( i selected custom area to select)
  3) "take screenshot"
- result: complete lock up along with windowing oddity, frozen until unity8 res
+ result: application bail out, in the instance of "select area" case, it will
take a screen shot in the instance of "full screen".
+ expected: get a screen shot of desired and the application should remain on
screen.
+
+ I suspect this is due to screenshot's reliance on X and our use of Xmir
+ not being completely worked out in terms of what the applications
+ perception of the screen vs it's own window is.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1660450] [NEW] Firefox crashes unity8 zesty

2017-01-30 Thread kevin gunn
Public bug reported:

I believe this is a different bug than bug 1627311

using a fresh zesty install, logging into unity8 deb session
I installed libertine manager
Since FF is installed as part of the original image - it shows up automagically
in the app drawer.
Clicking on the icon, a unity8 app window with a splash appears, but eventually
fails.

The only real error i see is in
~/.cache/upstart/application-legacy-firefox-blah.log
Error: GDK_BACKEND does not match available displays

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1510025] Re: Chrome/Chromium browser in Xmir (in DRI2 mode): Page contents never visible, all black, all white, or flickering

2017-01-30 Thread kevin gunn
Fwiw, I was testing in the following manner
Zesty, fresh install unity8 deb based session, snap installed chrome
(chrome-test)
Chrome launches fine but in terms of usability I saw massive flickering
with silo https://bileto.ubuntu.com/#/ticket/2383

Without that silo, there is still some out-of-order framerendering (for
instance, a progress bar within a web page will take 2 steps fwd, 1 step back
visually)
also, you can "feel" this when typing as letters will temporarily disappear
just after typing.
Also, adding a tab causes chrome to crash

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1543351] Re: osk with puritine apps

2016-02-15 Thread kevin gunn
** Description changed:

+ From perspective of product management - this is currently not a
+ requirement, just want to capture it for future
+
we currently can't interact with puritine apps relying on the OSK

to add this feature in where text-box selection on an xapp results in
triggering the osk, in unity8 would be a very large/complicated effort.
However, with a manual capability to trigger the OSK this could be
  achieved.

  For design team
one idea was to add a show/hide button for the OSK.
realizing this may be undesirable to add another indicator item - a follow-on
idea might be to add an alpha button in the corner of the xmir-root window (the
window that holds any xapp at the moment)
this way the button presence would only be limited to the Xapp interaction.

ah, i wonder if we should make this a unity8 change?

because I just noticed that the unity8 system bar actually reflects the

"Firefox"
"Gedit
"GIMP Image Editor"
"X-Chat GNOME"
however all the app windows always say "Xmir root window"

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1542028] Re: xapp window should reflect app name rather than "root xmir"

2016-02-08 Thread kevin gunn
we need to do something for users as they don't really care or want to
know that the "Mir surface represents the whole X11 desktop. So it's not
an app window but is the X11 root window."

unfortunately running -rootless we have the splash window problems.

and right, this is exactly what we want
"we might be able to do is somehow deduce at the X server level what the
focussed window title is and switch the X server's window title to match it."

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1532868] Re: [Avila] touch keyboard becomes useless after switching from desktop mode

2016-01-12 Thread kevin gunn
OK, after re-reading description. I believe we should ignore my comment #2
Because victor is obviously interacting with the OSK.
I've tried a few times on N4 and N7, OSK is always functioning as expected -
not generating random touch events.
So seems this is M10 specific
@Victor - is this always happening everytime switching from physcial to OSK ?

** Summary changed:

keyboard

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1532868] Re: [Avila] touch keyboard becomes useless after switching from desktop mode

2016-01-11 Thread kevin gunn
@Victor - which application are you seeing this is an issue?

I just tested N7, removing keyboard works fine for ubuntu apps.
I don't think this is an issue with connecting/disconnecting the keyboard.
This appears to be an issue with puritine apps not being hooked up for OSK to
get triggered.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1406725] Re: Severe graphical corruption (mostly horizontal streaks/lines) running software clients (including Xmir) on android

2015-11-11 Thread kevin gunn
Just discovered something while working on bug 1513815

Basically, i was running pd on N4 set this env variable
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen
which according to bjoern "forces LO to ignore the gtk plugin and uses the old
and trusty X11-only backend" ...figure this is true for all Xapps?
anyhow, i launched FF in full screen mode...no corruption, then connected
mouse...i see corruption...moused to full screen, no corruption. but there's a
black bar when no corruption, but the contents are all shown...
see video as it's easier to understand

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1513452] [NEW] Xmir scaling needs a way of adjusting for monitor connections

2015-11-05 Thread kevin gunn
Public bug reported:

on latest image, adjust GRID_UNIT_PX to ~8 globally for unity8, all the
native unity8 applications look correct when running on a Nexus 4 &
attached to external monitor

install puritine, launch FF, while attached to external monitor. Scaling
is incorrect (large) due to xmir dpi being based on physical phone
screen - need a way to tweak/hack to make FF appear usable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1374131] [NEW] qtcreator-plugin autopkg test fails on AMD64 mesa mesa_10.3.0

2014-09-25 Thread kevin gunn
Public bug reported:

So, in the course of a unity8 package migration it got halted due to
qtcreator-plugin autopkg test failing

see here
http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/proposed-migration/update_excuses.html

which lead me to look at the jenkins run, note its only failling on amd64 arch
and...you can see from here
https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job/utopic-adt-qtcreator-plugin-ubuntu/ARCH=amd64,label=adt/
it started failing about 24 hrs ago with can't init gxl...almost certainly
meaning it's unhappy with mesa.
low and behold the difference between the pasing jenkins and failing is

passing -
https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job/utopic-adt-qtcreator-plugin-ubuntu/ARCH=amd64,label=adt/266/console
which uses
mesa 10.2.6-1ubuntu3

failing -
https://jenkins.qa.ubuntu.com/job/utopic-adt-qtcreator-plugin-ubuntu/ARCH=amd64,label=adt/267/console
which uses
mesa 10.3.0-0ubuntu1

So can we do a couple of things?
- revert mesa and see if that fixes the autopkgtest to confirm
- if so, please leave reverted until we find out why so we can actually
continue landing our unity8/uitk/webbrowser stuff
- lastly, might be good to add qtcreator-plugin as an autopkgtest dependency to
land a new mesa

sorry for marking critical, but we're sunk until we get this sorted

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1318323] Re: Lack of Mir support in AMD fglrx driver

2014-05-13 Thread kevin gunn
i agree, we shouldn't keep it open. In the ideal case, when GPU partners
produce drivers (closed or open) it should just work(tm). However, it
might be the case in the future that a GPU partner might produce a
driver that mostly conforms in which case we will need to decide
whether or not to create another platform to support it. But agreed, no
need to keep a bug open for what may or may not happen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1211186] Re: [regression] GL(X) apps don't have vsync when running under XMir

2013-09-16 Thread kevin gunn
after some discussion to be clear - this does not lead to tearing.
the lack of throttling is at the glx level not the mir level

however, lacking a correction for this is still sub optimal for power.
