[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 858265] Re: No support for power management

2013-01-05 Thread lcampagn
I agree; my bug #1037388 (marked duplicate to this one) describes the
same experience. There are a few machines for which this driver should
be excluded by default.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1105392] [NEW] Non-native screen resolutions unavailable when using nVidia proprietary

2013-01-25 Thread lcampagn
Public bug reported:

Using the nVidia proprietary display driver, I am unable to change my
screen resolution; only the native resolution is available:

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TV-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS-0 connected 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm
x 207mm
   1920x1200 60.0*+
DVI-I-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

The nouveau driver does not have this problem.

More information here:

This would appear to be an nVidia bug. Question is, can we find a workaround?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1105392] Re: Non-native screen resolutions unavailable when using nVidia proprietary

2013-02-07 Thread lcampagn
Here's a better thread discussing the problem:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/525287/linux/non-native-resolutions-not-available-in-3xx-drivers-on-8700m-gt/

It appears that nVidia is aware of and has no intention to correct the
issue, so a workaround from ubuntu or the xorg folks may be the only
solution..

I would just recommend the nouveau driver if it weren't for the
overheating issues (#858265).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1037388] [NEW] GPU overheats with nouveau (ok with nvidia proprietary)

2012-08-15 Thread lcampagn
Public bug reported:

I am using kubuntu 12.04 on an HP mini 311, desktop effects disabled.
Originally I was using the nouveau driver. For the first couple of weeks I used
the machine, it would suddenly and immediately shut down a few times a day,
presumably due to overheating. I put the CPU through some heavy load tests
which did not result in any problems, but noticed that I most frequently
experienced shutdowns when viewing video.
I have been monitoring one of the internal temperature sensors
"acpi/Thermal_zone/0/Temperature" which was usually around 90C. Since switching
to the nvidia proprietary driver (~2 weeks ago), I have had no problems and the
temperature is around 65C most of the time.

All of this leads me to believe that the nouveau driver was causing the
GPU to overheat, but this is still somewhat speculative so I'd be happy
to run some tests if needed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 580225] Re: [gm45] Backlight sometimes stays off after resume on Lenovo X200

2010-07-11 Thread lcampagn
Same problem, on Lenovo X60 laptop. This problem is new for me as of
10.04--I did not have this problem for any other version of ubuntu back
to about 7.04. changing the brightness via keyboard does not work, nor
does "xset dpms force on". The only option I've found is to reboot.

I'd agree--the intel drivers have had numerous updates in the past few
months that seem to have solved most of my corruption issues.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 410248] Re: X consumes ever-increasing memory

2009-08-08 Thread lcampagn
I've had this problem for several months with identical symptoms. I'm
using KDE 4.3 (from backports) on a lenovo X60 tablet. Graphics hardware
is "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML".

I've found with 3GB ram, I need to kill the x server usually once or
twice per day, depending on what I've been doing.
