[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-08-28 Thread markling
I was unable to execute these commands.

The last generated an error:

couldn't find package linux-image-2.6.34-v9patch-generic

I tried the patch after being told that it might make it possible for me
to upgrade to Ubuntu v10. I'm still unable to upgrade to Ubuntu v10:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9774440#post9774440

The first command in your list is erroneous (apt-add). I'm sure this is
plain to see for most people, but it does not fill a feeble linux user
like myself with confidence.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534012] [NEW] [karmic] Only low graphics mode on IBM X40 with Intel 855gm after external monitor crash using docking-station

2010-03-07 Thread markling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

My graphics has gone kaput on Karmic.

Machine: IBM X40
Graphics: Intel 82852/855GM Int. Graphics Device (rev 02)
Docking station: X4 Ultrabase

My machine has got stuck in low graphics mode after an error.

Background
-

The graphics have been working fine on Karmic with the exception of some
issues relating to an external monitor and X40 docking-station. But this
combo has led to a more serious problem.

Usually, redocking with external screen on would cause the system to
tell me there was a problem resolving the screen resolution. If I tried
to reset it with the GUI screen resolution tool, it would tell me that
software acceleration would be required. I would decline to do this,
because such requests were not normal, and reset the machine instead.
The graphics would be back to normal on reboot.

The error-causing event
-

Instead of ignoring the prompt for software acceleration, as I usually
do, I accepted it.

The system then gave the following error:

"Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be
detected correctly. You will need to configure them yourself."

Outcome
-

On reboot, the system says the graphics aren't working and I can only
operate in low graphics mode.

P.S.

Bug reporting problem
---
Now I have nearly completed my bug report, I see that it says under this window
"

"xorg (Ubuntu) guidelines:
Please report bugs against xorg with this command:

  $ ubuntu-bug -p xorg

For more tips on effective bug reporting against Ubuntu Xorg packages,
please see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting and thanks ahead of time!"

I used the following command:

$ ubuntu-bug xorg

I shall go back and use the -p to file a report. But seeing as I've got
this far with the one I was already doing, I'm going to send it in case
this is the most effective option.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534012] Re: [karmic] Only low graphics mode on IBM X40 with Intel 855gm after external monitor crash using docking-station

2010-03-07 Thread markling
Two crucial items of information about the bug:

1. Before the crash occurred, the X40 laptop was attached to the docking
station, its monitor and the external monitor were both on, and the
desktop spread across them both. The following then happened:

- The laptop was removed from the docking station while still on.
- The laptop screen corrected itself to display the full desktop that had
previously been displayed across both screens
- The laptop was replaced on the docking station. The external monitor was
still powered up.
- The system reported problem resolving screen resolution, and the rest is as
described in my bug report.

2. Since this problem occured there has been another crippling problem
with my graphics: I cannot get the laptop graphics to work at all if I
attempt to switch it on when it is not attached to the docking station.
If I attempt to switch it on without being attatched to the docking
station, the system doesn't boot far enough to give me the 'graphics not
working properly' error. If I attach the machine to the docking station
and then switch it on, it will work but only in low-graphics mode.

(P.S. I re-reported this bug using -p with the ubuntu-bug command and
linked that report to this one. hopefully that's given all the info you
need).

please excuse me, Bruce, but do you mean for me to install that package?
I'd be very grateful if you would tell me how.
