Are we sure that the pipeline error is a separate cause of a freeze up?
I've had a lot of freezes in Ubuntu 17.04 and the freeze has only once
been accompanied by the pipeline update.

In my kernel logs, the pipeline appears once, but all seem to have the
kernel BUG swapops.h, ( after --[cut here]--).

kind of touchpad that this driver supports.  Supposing it is,  you need
to use the synclient program to review and set the options. Simply
installing the d river does not necessarily do any good.  You need to be
sure the kernel module is loading and then configure everything.

 If, after a system restart, you can do this to see if the psmouse module is 
running.

Only after you make sure there will y ou have any hope of configuring
the thing with synclient.

If you get psmouse loaded, and synclient shows output, then I'd say you
probably need to ask for help from Ubuntu users, since not all versions
of linux will have exactly the same problems.

Sampo Saarela:  The RedHat/Fedora folks have been a little late to the
party on this problem. In fact, they tried to close work on it, arguing
that it was an impossible problem because ALPS would not cooperate.   It
was really quite disappointing to me.

That's why I'm so impressed and delighted that Seth Forshee found a way
to make it work.

Now there are packages for their distros, however. I think the best
place to track that is here:

Hello, Seth

It's me again, still trying to get good diagnostic output for the
driver.  I have 2 files attached here, as you ask for.

In the previous post, I said that sometimes the mouse flies off to the
top left, and you asked if perhaps I'm touching the left part of the
touchpad. I've been checking. Definitely, I'm not touching the left
side.  That still happens intermittently. And here's the weirdest part.
If I plug in a USB mouse and keyboard, sometimes the cursor flies about
wild up to the left, even if I don't touch the touchpad at all. Just
using the mouse does that.

The other weird problem is periodic "sluggishness". Sometimes touching
the pad just doesn't move the pointer much.   Sometimes it will stay
sluggish for a long while and I modprobe the psmouse to shake it loose.
But sometimes it goes away after 5 or 10 seconds. I don't see any
pattern in it.  I've been trying to get diagnostic output for those
moments.  I change to the VT1 and create the diagnostic files, but I
fear the output will not help you because the sluggishness may be cured
by the act of hitting Alt-Ctl-F1.  I mean, by the time I get there and
run input-events, I can't say for sure if the mouse is still sluggish or
not.

But I just have to rely on your  best guess!

On Debian, my kernel is 3.0.0-1-amd64 and the psmouse patch is version
10.

I've after alps-dkms version 0.6 or so, I have noticed occasional weird
behaviors.  Sometimes cursor flies to far left of screen, sometimes the
touchpad seems to become nonresponsive for a moment.  Often it wakes up
and works again, sometimes I have to remove and reload the module.  Two
times tonight I've noticed this and have looked into the input-events
output.  It turns out the Debian input-utils is not build correctly for
their kernel, but the Ubuntu input-events will install and so it seems
to work.

I can't say if these files are going to help, but I followed Seth's
instructions and I am attaching 2 sets of files in a tarball (since I
can't find a way to attach more than one file in this interface). OK?

To users who say "touchpad is too sensitive", do not bother Seth about
the driver.  Instead, learn how to properly configure your device.

synclient is a command line program you use to interact with the ALPS
touchpad. Do not bother with the Gnome Menu system->mouse-> touchpad
settings.  Those are just a small sliver of settings you can adjust.

Run "synclient -l" to review your current settings.  If your touchpad is
too sensitive (mine was) or you don't have vertical scrolling (I did
not) or you want two finger taps, then test the settings with synclient
and then make them permanent by putting a configuration file into your
system.

If "too sensitive" is your situation, look at the setting for FingerLow
and FingerHigh. That fixed it for me. I also had no "right side vertical
scroll" because the measurement of my touchpad was far from the default
settings. My RightEdge is 1750, and touches to the right of that point
will work for vertical scroll.

For the record, on my Dell Precision M4600, these are the settings I use
now, and they are mostly correct, except for the "accidental grab"
problem I  described, but cannot re-produce reliably.

Once you find the changes you like, they can be put into a config file. On 
Debian Linux, the file you can most obviously edit is
 /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf, but as that file says at the 
top, it will get erased if you update X11.  So I have put the permanent changes 
into this file:

Greetings.

do you get accidental "grabs" as you try to move the cursor?  I never
noticed this in the psmouse dkms patch version 0.2, but in 0.9, it
happens often. Moving the cursor toward top with a few finger brushes
does not always select a region, but sometimes it does.

Is that likely related to this weird thing that happens sometimes. I
remove hands from typing, lifting them off the laptop entirely. WHen I
start typing again, the cursor is in an entirely different spot. It is
as if the protection from palm brushes had failed, but in a worse than
usual way.

This is a Dell Precision M4600.

I have wrestled with this lots, and the problem is that no two people
describe it as the same problem.

For some people, the mouse/touchpad driver or module is just wrong.  I
believe they are the minority.

The majority are people who have working devices, but can't figure how
to configure them and the point-and-click tools that keep getting thrown
about just make it worse.

If you can make settings work in the terminal with synclient, I wrote
down how you can make those fixes permanent.

For Gnome users, the magic bullet is to stop using the mouse configure

I have fought with this and now can tell you the once and for all fix.
You can't fix this with GUI menus and such, but this is a definite, lead
pipe guaranteed fix if you are willing to do some file editing.

1. As in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/463735/comments/11,
fiddle with synclient to find out what changes you like. (synclient -l
to display, synclient VAR=setting to set).

2. Write those settings into the file
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf

For example, here are my settings.

3. Prevent  your desktop from changing those settings.  XFCE leaves
those settings alone, that was how I first figured out they work.

BUT gnome will not leave them alone.  Gnome tries to re-set the way it
thinks you want, and this work is done by gnome-settings-daemon.  It
will try to put back in whatever settings youget when you do the menu
System/Personal/Mouse to config the touchpad.  We need to prevent that
from overriding the settings in the synaptics.conf file.

Run "gconf-editor" and navigate to
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/mouse and UNCHECK active.

Log out, log in. Voila. Long standing problem solved. Whew.  I searched
for this fix for a months.

If you run KDE, I don't know what you have to do to fix this.

Oh, there is one other change I made, but I think it ends up being
irrelevant.

Many people are plagued by this hassle, and they have many descriptions
of it.  Some think it is a flaw in the Xserver, others see it as a
configuration of the startup process, some see it as a mouse configuator
problem.  Some people noticed that in the X log, it sometimes appears as
if the touchpad driver is loaded twice, and people were guessing that
was causing the problem that settings in 50-synaptics.conf were ignored.
Some people suggested commenting out lines in the file:

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf

They say do this:

I did it, and forgot about it.  It had no effect as far as I could see.
I've been studying the X startup files and I don't see any benefit from
this.   But it is still that way in my system.

Have any Ubuntu users applied the patch proposed on the link to the fix
in the free desktop site, on the right side of this report.  I mean
this:

If so, how?  I have the compiz-fusion-plugins-extra source from
Ubuntu-10.10, but the patch doesn't apply to compiz-fusion-plugins-
extra-0.8.6.  What do you think?

Hi. I've been fine tuning my touchpad as well. I've not seen your
trouble, but can tell you some diagnostic steps. I believe, in the end,
you will find this is not a touchpad problem, but a keyboard/mouse
button problem.


I wonder if you do System-Preferences->Mouse and change from left to right 
handed buttons, does it have an effect?

The touchpad  program synclient can list, monitor, or set touchpad
values. Run it in a terminal.   In -m monitor mode, note i hit the left
and right buttons and 1 appears for l and r. the other lines are from me
twitcing and hitting the touchpad as well.

Your description leads me to suspect you just see 1 under "l" when you
hit either key?

You can run "synclient -l" to dump out all settings, but where it says
"Button" in there, it means tap emulation on the pad.

In launchpad, I find several other bugs that sound similar to yours, but
as I read them over and over, I think, when they say "button" they mean
touchpad corner taps and such, not the actual mouse-like button hardware
on the laptop.

I think your settings have to be in the mouse button controls.  The

I'm sorry, Friedrich. I cannot understand your words.  If  you mean that
Ubuntu has fixed the problem, I do not agree. On my system, using the
xmodmap file I gave above, the key combinations like Shift-Control-S
don't do anything.
