[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1755188] [NEW] system freeze after update

2018-03-12 Thread trailingedge
Public bug reported:

On legacy NVDIA machine, after CCSM update 28 Feb 2018, system would
freeze with either soft-boot or hard-boot required.

If able to switch to console/terminal, and run "TOP", the table showed COMPIZ
maxing out at 100%.

As a workaround, I had to :
1. switch to lowgfx under "preferences" in CCSM
2. under OpenGL, switched off a. SynctoVblank" b. "Framebuffer object" c.
"Vertex buffer object" and d. "Always use buffer swapping"
3. under Composite, set refresh rate at higher values, settling on 89

Running nouveau driver, and firmware update.

The system freeze was most likely using LibreOffice5 (latest stable
version).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1752377] [NEW] CompizConfig maxxing out 100% CPU

2018-02-28 Thread trailingedge
Public bug reported:

Very difficult filing this report, as system almost unusable since
latest CompizConfigSysMgr update.

Monitoring with TOP, Compiz hogs resources, at 100% or even 106%,
sometimes relinquishing resources after 2 or 3 minutes lag.

If Kill command for Compiz PID, then sometimes Compiz will recover, more
likely, Compiz freezes whole system, requiring reboot e.g. from
terminal.

Lag in compiz confirmed using different software: LibreOffice 5,
LibreOffice 6, Firefox

Many complains about CompizConfig update on AskUbuntu:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1010634/ubuntu-16-04-compiz-uses-way-too-much-cpu

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1006621/2-15-18-compiz-update-broke-unity
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1010038/unity-top-bar-and-launcher-disappeared-feb-24-2018

Tried switch to LOWGFX mode, but problem with Compiz persists. Problem
is worse for me since latest Compiz update, but as filed previously, I
was getting similar behavior from Ubuntu LibreOffice 5, with previous
version Compiz.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625873] Re: display issues - dashboard unstable

2016-11-25 Thread trailingedge
Switched to "low graphics" mode in Unity (as explained below), but
problem with Ubuntu Dashboard is worse in some respects.

Installed "Compiz Configuration Settings Manager" > Preferences >
Profile: select "unity-lowgfx". The screen seems to respond immediately
to the changed setting, The screen "blinked" ever so briefly as the
graphical effects were reduced or disabled.

For good measure, also in "Compiz Configuration Settings Manager" >
click on "Ubuntu Unity Plugin" icon > under "General" tab scroll down to
"Enable Low Graphics Mode" > check the box.

(When I made the above changes, and tried to use the Dash, a couple of
problems arose immediately: 1. launcher icons in left column were all
temporarily blurred out (or written over) and disabled (unusable); 2.
the mouse pointer turned into a square; 3. the system froze, requiring
soft reboot using FN+ALT+SYSRQ+REISUB. Upon reboot, launcher icons back
to normal, pointer back to normal, but Dashboard behavior has NOT
improved.)

Dashboard still showing some garbage output, when I put in search terms.
Again, my legacy laptop's display problem is not really solved yet.

I'm considering scrubbing Compiz 3-D windows compositor (purging the
package) and reverting to Metacity 2-D windows compositor (replacing the
one with the other).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625873] Re: display issues - dashboard unstable

2016-10-30 Thread trailingedge
Okay, I enabled the "Processor microcode firmware for AMD CPUs from
amd64-microcode (proprietary)" and performance has improved somewhat,
for both the Dashboard and streaming video playback (both embedded video
and fullscreen video).

Dashboard still showing some garbage output, when I put in search terms,
and the display does not tidy up after showing me the relevant icons;
but searched icons do appear and Dashboard is usable. Again, my legacy
laptop's display problem is not really solved yet.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1625873] [NEW] display issues - dashboard unstable

2016-09-20 Thread trailingedge
Public bug reported:

Typing in Dashboard search creates garbage on screen, running nouveau
driver. After considerable lag, the icons appear corresponding to the
search, the display tidies up, and Dashboard becomes usable.

Otherwise, Unity desktop running okay. Ubuntu 16.04 on AMD-64 machine,
HP laptop dv9000 series

Is monitor being detected properly? Do I need a bios update?
