I tried with the official CD Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 i36, and the machine still boots into VESA mode. Same for me on up to date Precise. I tried pci=noacpi and older kernelsas mentioned above, but nothing helps. I recognized this regression after upgrading to precise. I had this nasty bug for weeks, getting crazy. After i read comment #89 I disabled Workrave and the problem is gone ! Wow ! It still is a workaround, because i would like to use workrave again.
