The original issue with welcome.py is fixed in 3.4.1, but I also noticed an error was hit with the apport hook, so am redefining this bug report to focus on that latter issue. The apport hook passed its tests and runs fine for me locally, but apparently it is slightly different when run under apport in an actual install.
