[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1304912] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 laptop uses lot of power switchable graphics

2014-12-24 Thread Anchit Singh
Recently, there have been some library updates which also included

xserver-xorg-core

I have been observing my machine since, and the problem of fans running
constantly has vanished, atleast for now.
Can someone else confirm this please??

2014-12-16 Thread Goran Obal
Has anyone tried adding radeon.dpm=1 to your grub?

Try:
edit /etc/default/grub and add the 'radeon.dpm=1' to the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line, so it would look something like:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash radeon.dpm=1

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1304912] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 laptop uses lot of power switchable graphics

2014-12-16 Thread Lars Schütze
I am currently on Ubuntu 14.10 and my time on battery improved significant. The
CPU temperate now gets below 60°C on idle (~57°C; but 47-50°C on Windows).
I am still concerned since the overall heat produced from the laptop is somehow
still much more less on Windows. I am not sure if the graphics card is really
shut down 100% if not in use.

Lars, is this improvement just after going from 14.04 to 14.10 or did

This improvement is just by moving from 14.04 to 14.10.
I just cat'ed my grub config and I do not have radeom.dpm stated there
anymore. It should be active by default anyway.

Ubuntu 14.04 laptop uses lot of power switchable graphics

Status in xserver-xorg-video-ati package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

 Bug description:
   I have a Samsung Series 7 Chronos 700Z3A-S02DE. It uses an i5-2450m
(Intel HD3000) and an AMD 6490m dedicated graphics card. Since Ubuntu
14.04 uses Linux kernel 3.13 it enables dpm by default. This causes
the graphics card to be shut down to dynoff when not used and should
make it use (almost) no power.

However, the laptop fans are working all the time and the laptop
produces quite a lot of noise (the CPU does not heat as sensors are at
60°C). The sensor for the graphcis card always shows -128°C.

Using powertop it reveals that the laptop consumes around 34W on
battery. Looking on the list where the usage is shown per device it
shows the radeon graphics card with 0%.

I think there is a bug and the graphics card is NOT shutdown correctly
to not use any noticable power.

I would appreciate if I can help you to find the issue and if you need any
 more information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1304912] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 laptop uses lot of power switchable graphics

2014-04-09 Thread Lars Schütze
** Description changed:

  I have a Samsung Series 7 Chronos 700Z3A-S02DE. It uses an i5-2450m
(Intel HD2000) and an AMD 6490m dedicated graphics card. Since Ubuntu
14.04 uses Linux kernel 3.13 it enables dpm by default. This causes the
graphics card to be shut down to dynoff when not used and should make it
  use (almost) no power.

However, the laptop fans are working all the time and the laptop
- produces quite a lot of heat (the CPU does not heat as sensors are at
+ produces quite a lot of noise (the CPU does not heat as sensors are at
