For the record, the shadow issue appears only with application that use client-side decorations (e.g. Nautilus, gedit). I've seen this on an Ubuntu 14.04 machine with GTK+ 3.14 apps running over remote X from a Debian unstable container. I've seen this on Ubuntu 14.10 with GTK upgraded to 3.14 from ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging.
