I encountered X server abort above many times when changing layout and resolution of the screens. Though it is quite random. But it is already fixed in the next X server version 1.19. While Ubuntu 16.04.2 uses X server 1.18. The patch is https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=e473b2bc016adacfe3fa47fdf6a8ce9f8cddff62 . I tried and it applied cleanly to branch 1.18 and I solved the issue for me. The patch above contains a reproduction test.
