[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383252] Re: Bad pixels other artifacts on fonts
We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- Bad pixels other artifacts on fonts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/383252 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383252] Re: Bad pixels other artifacts on fonts
[This is an automatic notification.] A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic. This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting (currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc. I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA, would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves the bug you reported? https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908 /+listing-archive-extra If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the Karmic LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X. ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/ After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not, and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output. Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- Bad pixels other artifacts on fonts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/383252 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383252] Re: Bad pixels other artifacts on fonts
I've been able to verify that Chromium does not use RENDER acceleration for antialiased fonts for web content; I asked one of the developers. That would seem to explain why it doesn't show up for Chromium web content (as stated in my previous comment). I believe this is a bug in EXA RENDER acceleration on the Radeon RV100. From https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/radeon-change-xaa-to-exa : Extra efforts should be put into getting EXA issues forwarded upstream. ... I'm hoping my hunches/semi-educated guesses here fall under extra efforts. Cf: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2006-July/016661.html -- this sounds like the same issue. Note that Despite the name (rv200), [the Radeon 7500 is] r100 based. (http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIRadeon#head- 9161ac9470497d94f1a4f79794697347b20d5170). That report is from 2006. I could swear I was looking at a blog post on the commit of EXA RENDER accel support for Radeon the week before last, but I cannot find it now. I'll keep poking; it seems RV200 and RV100 and programmatically similar, and I'd like to ask if it was ever tested on RV100. -- Bad pixels other artifacts on fonts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/383252 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383252] Re: Bad pixels other artifacts on fonts
I am also seeing this (on Karmic). Sometimes still readable is a stretch. It goes away if antialiasing is disabled. Bitmap fonts are unaffected. GTK and QT widgets are affected, as is the web content in a firefox window. The web content in chromium nightlies from http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu is not, despite being antialiased. Setting the AccelMethod for the ati driver to XAA seems to have made the problem go away. My card is Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE] which seems to be the same as the original reporter's.

** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Fonts in a number of programs are broken, though still readable. I'm using the default Ubuntu jaunty install, nothing fancy. http://i39.tinypic.com/1jlydc.jpg http://i44.tinypic.com/jz9ox5.jpg Programs where this commonly occurs are the desktop, gnome-terminal, pidgin, and firefox. Xchat seems to be immune, for reasons I don't understand. In some places it's noticeably worse than others. Occasionally there are large black lines running through the fonts. Rebooting does not make the problem disappear. This happens whether subpixel rendering is turned on or off. = Description: Ubuntu 9.04 Release: 9.04 xorg: Installed: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 Candidate: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 Version table: *** 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04 Package: xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/zsh ProcVersion: Linux version 2.6.28-11-generic (bui...@palmer) (gcc version 4.3.3 (Ubuntu 4.3.3-5ubuntu4) ) #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 SourcePackage: xorg Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic i686 + distro: Ubuntu + architecture: i686 + kernel: 2.6.28-11-generic + xserver-xorg: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 + mesa: 7.4-0ubuntu3.1 + libdrm: 2.4.5-0ubuntu4 + -intel: 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9 + -ati: 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2 ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) = xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) -- Bad pixels other artifacts on fonts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/383252 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
