Confirming this bug here on karmic 9.10 Problem is: I am using Kubuntu and in Kubuntu there is no way to change those options in the mouse preferences... As mentioned in bug #378391, going to System - Preferences - Mouse - Touchpad and checking Enable mouse clicks with touchpad fixes the problem.
