Got the same issue:

09:15:59 up 2 days, 13:41,  7 users,  load average: 1.85, 2.42, 2.15

# ps aux | grep 1143
root  1143 14.6  6.5 894084 133576 tty7Ss+ Jul19 540:07 /usr/bin/X :0 
-nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-2b3xUj/database -nolisten tcp vt7

System seems OK once booted up/GDM started, but system is extremely sluggish  
unresponsive when I left it running overnight.
I've removed compositing from GUI, but that only have marginal impact.

Same thing here takes almost all of 1 core on a 4 core machine running
fully updated lucid

Hi, I have the same thing, X is using about 33% of cpu on a dual-core thinkpad 
x200, newish install of lucid.
/usr/bin/X :0 -nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-8o0dy2/database

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the 
original reporter.  However, if the issue still exists please feel free to 
reopen with the requested information.  Also, if you could, please test against 
the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we 
may be able to pass upstream for help.
