I am using an intel chipset on this machine and won't have a chance to
check nvidia until later, but the problem can be summed up as the
"Logout" desktop effect blacking out the background rather than showing
the dialogue box with the background applications, etc. behind it.
In the mean time I have just disabled it, since the logout dialogue
appears correct in that case.
I have attached a screen shot.
