Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg
After upgrading Kubuntu to karmic (from jaunty), my computer (a Fujitsu- Siemens Esprimo Q5020, small desktop) will not boot into Xorg. The boot splash is displayed correctly, but as soon as Xorg starts, the screen becomes completely black (every time). Trying to switch to the terminals (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+1) shows no reaction, only Ctrl+Alt+Del reboots. Booting into failsafe mode shows the exact same behavior. So, basically there is no way to get into my system any more (except booting from an old kubuntu 8.04 installation disk that I had lying around). here are some technical details: -) Xorg.0.log is attached -) Will attach kdm.log -) lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub (rev 03) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 03) [...] -) The video driver in Xorg.conf is "intel". -) /var/log/dmesg shows normal startup until the X server crashes: Nov 18 17:10:47 curie ntpdate[2568]: adjust time server 91.189.94.4 offset -0.105053 sec Nov 18 17:10:55 curie kdm[998]: X server died during startup Nov 18 17:10:55 curie kdm[998]: Failed to start X server.
