[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503393] Re: xserver freeze after a few reboots

apport information

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

This is new to Karmic. I have not had this problem before. I first tried
to go into a virtual console using Alt+F1 etc. The system froze. It
could not be contacted by another machine on the network. I reformatted
twice and performed a clean install. After a few successful boots, X
server would stop loading. The screen would go blank and the system
would freeze leaving no option but to do a hard reboot. I was able to do
a startx from a recovery console (by getting into it using the shift key
during the bootloader stage). The attached Xorg.0.log.old captures the
problem when the X server gives up.

After some attempts, it may randomly decide to load up again. No reason
  that I can make out

I have experienced some screen freezes in jaunty (32 bit *not* 64-bit).
I have never experienced this with Hardy *ever*, in which I installed
  the proprietary fglrx drivers.

But Karmic has been unstable in this respect from Day 1. I have no
choice but to go back to jaunty, or look for another distribution or
hope that someone advises me how to get around this, since work is
  severely affected.

I am also attaching a gdm log of today just in case it helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503393] Re: xserver freeze after a few reboots

2010-06-02 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I installed Lucid on the same machine and have had a couple of X server
freezes - I move the mouse pointer around and suddenly everything goes
into a complete freeze.

Don't want to switch to vesa mode driver if I can help it mainly because
I normally attach another (bigger) display to the laptop when I am
working (which I can't do in vesa mode).

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503393] Re: xserver freeze after a few reboots

2010-06-02 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I have installed Lucid on the system and the display freezes suddenly in
the middle of a mouse or keyboard movement. I have posted the relevant
information on the launchpad site, as suggested by you.

I think the problem is due to acceleration because:

1. Once when the system froze, I was in the middle of a very rapid
scroll within firefox using the PgUp key on the keypad

2. the other time it was when I was rapidly moving the mouse.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503393] Re: xserver freeze after a few reboots

2010-02-24 Thread pramathesh ambasta
To add to what I finally did to get a working Karmic Install - I use the
X11 Vesa driver. The system freezes etc. have stopped and I have been
able to get work done. But obviously, this is not the best of solutions.
So hoping that the bug is fixed

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503393] Re: xserver freeze after a few reboots

2010-01-12 Thread pramathesh ambasta
To report further, the system worked well for a few days and froze once
again. After that it performed without a hitch for a few more days but
today, while in the process of selecting applications for installation
in Synaptic, it froze and the screen turned to black and white stripes.

Again, the system turned unresponsive and could not even be connected to
from another computer via ssh.

Nothing in the logs as far as I can see which seems to capture this.
