[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538893] Re: [CLE266] Console screens unusable on Jetway system with VT8623, boot problems

I, too, am experiencing trouble with Ubuntu 10.04 with a 2.6.32-21
-generic-based installer on:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8623 [Apollo
CLE266] integrated CastleRock graphics (rev 03)

I am doing a text mode netboot install and not setting up X. The
installer is unusable with distorted broken dialogs and unreadable font.
I tried booting the kernel with video=vga16fb:off,viafb:off, but that
did not fix the broken screen.

I understand this is still an open issue, but I am at least looking for
a workaround to be able to netinstall machines in text mode.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538893] Re: [CLE266] Console screens unusable on Jetway system with VT8623, boot problems

2010-04-20 Thread Peter Belew
I'm updating this system right now - it hadn't been updated for a few
days. I believe blacklisting the viafb solved the problem, and I believe
that's the default now - to blacklist viafb. I'll check again when the
update is complete.

I have another system with the same kind of motherboard. that has a
Samsung SyncMaster 570@ tft display connected. This system hangs up
during boot of the 17 April daily-build live CD - the boot screen with
the moving colored dots keeps going on and on, and booting never
completes. Later I'll try that live CD on THIS system, which has a CRT
display.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538893] Re: [CLE266] Console screens unusable on Jetway system with VT8623, boot problems

2010-04-20 Thread Peter Belew
After today's update, this system is running

Linux lightning 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux

viafb is in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf - this is now the
default situation.
