If you have a ~/.config/monitors.xml file try to rename or delete it. This file will be written when you try to configure your graphic whithout the nvidia tool. It looks, like this file overrite your nvidia-sxerver-settings at startup -- [lucid] Ubuntu with NVIDIA starts up in 1440x900, even though screen is 1680x1050. Please make sure to enable the nvidia driver, reboot and run apport-collect 549379 in a terminal once you have the wrong resolution so the Xorg logs are attached to the report.
