After some research on the topic, I have found that this is an extremely common problem with the Thinkpad x40. Have you tried reverting back to the Karmic Kernel yet? Hi, no I didn't try reverting the kernel yet, since everything works fine with the workaround except the external VGA output. Where did you find signs of this common problem? A few links could be useful - and I mean the external VGA, not the black screen issue. Fill me in on a few things. Are you useing an integrated VGA adapter, and are you useing a 32-bit distro on a 64-bit machine? I had a similar problem with both. Yes, but actually randr does not offer any lower resolutions than 60Hz on any of the external outputs I have tested using 1024x768. I just re-tried this on my 19 screen, which supports higher resolutions (up to 1280x1024) and higher refresh rates (70Hz and 75Hz). Setting it to 70.1Hz had no effect, but using 75Hz makes the problem disappear! I have no access today to the beamers, but I remember that they only offered 60Hz and Auto. Nevertheless, booting the 9.10 livecd without setting anything produces a clear image on the 19 screen, so for me this is a regression. I am using a 32bit distro on a 32bit machine (a Thinkpad X40). Re-enabling KMS via i915.modeset=1 parameter line 2.)
