2010-10-03 Thread intrader
So far, I have found 10.10 RC a joy to use - works as expected.

The machine is an old laptop 'Dell Inspiron 8200' with 1GB of memory and
200GB of disk and has nvidia display driver.

I have done the following:
On a new partition I installed OpenSolaris - runs very well with the same
firefox windows and tabs

On a new partition I installed ubuntu 10.10 beta - seems to run, but I
noticed some artifacts in a web page that should not be there

I am testing 10.10 beta with the problems reported for 10.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 631130] Re: In all apps, slow UI since 10.04 install

2010-09-24 Thread intrader
I would characterise the behaviour of the mouse as stick. Once the
'mouse-down' is detected, the 'mouse up' is delayed causing a lot of
problems with hovering over icons, scrollbar sticking, highlight
misbehavior.

The new driver seems peppier, but has many similar problems as the
former version (.17).

Continuing tests.

Sorry, that is 96.43.18.
Seems like the UI is more responsive; I will do more testing. It appears that
the problem had to do with duration of the mouse down after a single click.
Unfortunatelly, because I was banging hard and repeatedly on my mouse button,
it broke. This is a Dell Inspiron 8200, so I can use the touchpad button
instead.

this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work,
I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.

Marking additional tasks in other distributions as invalid. There is no
bug filed for those distributions, but the problem exists for the
original reporter when using them.

Here is a recording of the 'highlighting' problem. The scenario is:

Here I mouse to a position in Xchat window and then
1. Click
2. Move mouse up one line,
3. Move mouse down one line

Shows highlighting started; it should not have started as the mouse was
not down

Use 'eog' to view - or gimp to examine frames.

2010-09-14 Thread intrader
Here is a recording of the 'scrollbar' problems. The scenario is:

I move the mouse to the inner scrollbar of Xchat:

1. Click on scrollbar button
2. Move the mouse to the Xchat text window - note that the scrollbar
incorrectly follows the mouse movement.

This is incorrect as the scrollbar should not follow the mouse if the
mouse is not down. To cancel, I eventually get into the 'highlight
problem' - ESC does the trick to stop the scrollbar from following - so
does clicking repeatedly on the scrolbar button.

2010-09-11 Thread intrader
I plan to video each of the problems mentioned - I am using `recordMyDesktop`.
Hopefully, this will be useful. I am having difficulties repeating conditions
reliably.
First, I will records the highlight problem: highlighting should not start
without mouse down (highlighting as mouse moves while down, and quit when mouse
goes up.); problem is that sometimes highlighting starts without mouse being
down - it spontaneously starts highlighting a short instance after click of
mouse.

Please indicate if there is another way to record.

Result so far, unable to record.

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 10.04, package not identified.
  I have reported in forum
'http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9782591#post9782591'. I have a
gtktest result of 28.04.
The machine is old (Dell Inspiron 8200 1G memory, 100GB disk, running NVIDIA
version 96), with three five partitions, Windows XP, Windows 7, ubuntu 10.04,
/home and /swap.
  Significantly:
  1. Machine runs Windows XP and windows 7 peppily and well (same firefox load
of tabs)
  2. Machine used to run 9.04 well (but with no skype)
  3. Install of 9.10 retaining /home results in sluggish UI
  4. Install of 9.04 retaining /home results in good performance on UI, until
Update Manager suggested to update which I did. Result same sluggish UI as in
9.10. Update manager suggests to upgrade.
  5. Upgrade to 10.04 fails to boot.
  6. Install 10.04 from .iso retaining /home. Result is sluggish UI . but I
have a functioning Skype

I have also tried all new distribution of Suse 11.3, Fedora 11,
Mandrake, XMint, with the same sluggish problems.

So now I am suspecting Xorg or the Kernel. My first hunch is new changes
for multi-touch have screwed thing up.
