Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Since I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10, the monitor displays correctly for a couple of seconds, then turns black for a fraction of a second and then repeats the on and off sequence, making the computer nearly unusable. The whole sequence is periodic, not random. Another bug reported earlier (#606987) persists in this release as well, perhaps with the exception that restarting the computer (as opposed to turning it on after a shutdown) gives a normal logon screen. (I only used Restart a couple of times since the upgrade.) Also, you should include an explanation in your bug report why you're using an xorg.conf, since for this hardware you typically shouldn't need to use an xorg.conf except in specific circumstances. Regarding xorg.conf on my hard disk, which has Ubuntu 10.10 - I renamed it so as to have no file with exactly that name, but the problem persists in 10.10, as it does with a live CD for natty. Hmm, ok reason I ask is looking at your Xorg.0.log everything looks totally bog standard except at the end there are 9 sequences of XRANDR queries to the monitor. Those queries can typically cause screen flickers such as what you're seeing. And it is not unprecedented for some arbitrary client application to set up polling calls of X server such as to check if a new monitor is installed; on some hardware this works without flicker, on some it does. This behavior is typically highly periodic, such as you're seeing. A way to check if this is the case would be to review what processes you have running (e.g. look at ps aux) and one by one shut them down until the blanking stops. The other typical cause of blanking issues like this is underruns of the GPU. Basically, X is not able to feed data through to your graphics card fast enough. Often when this happens, there are error messages printed to dmesg and/or Xorg.0.log, yet this does not appear in your logs. If you do rule out a client app, or otherwise want to continue exploring it as an X issue specifically, here's the next step. We're going to be moving natty to its new X stack within the next week or two. Currently this stack is available in xorg-edgers, and should match almost exactly what will soon be in natty. I'd like to have you attempt to reproduce your issue with this new stack. If it still occurs with that stack, we can then take the the bug upstream, or approach the kernel team or other appropriate groups about it. a) With a live CD for natty, the display is fine up to the screen where I am shown the menu that includes using Ubuntu without installing. Once I choose this option the display changes and the name ubuntu appears, underscored by five dots whose color changes from white to red and back to show that the computer is doing work. It is there that the screen starts to blink. b) For maverick, the PPA gives no improvement. Since there are dozens of processes even at startup, many run by root, I am not sure which ones to kill short of taking down gnome. It seems that you've got two monitors plugged in - does this problem occur on both monitors simultaneously, both monitors independently, or just one monitor? Does this still happen if you unplug one of the monitors? No, I have only one monitor, although at some level - at least for maverick and older versions - the computer seems to think that I have two. This is probably at least part of the cause of the other bug (#606987) I mentioned in the original description of this problem. No Cobalt, those are maverick logs again, you need to have natty logs from running apport on natty. Thanks; re-testing xorg-edgers is helpful but this is almost certainly a kernel bug. xorg-edgers doesn't carry kernel updates, so I wouldn't expect it'd solve this. Instead, download and boot a new daily cd, then run 'apport-collect 681054' to update the logs. This is kind of a borderline High/Medium importance... on the one hand it is a severe issue, on the other it appears to affect only a single person. Hi, Bryce, could we coordinate further processing with upstream? I understand everybody has a lot of work to do, so I would like to know you are ready to forward the report and upstream is ready to look into it if I test again. I have tested edgers and especially natty several times only to be asked to test again weeks later since the upstream code might have changed in the mean time. Is there any reason to think that this particular issue may have been addressed, however? Actually, I would expect upstream to be able to answer this question quickly and if they want me to retest I will be happy to do it. Regarding the kernel, well, I have used live CD's for natty. Do you want me to retest maverick with a new kernel? If so, where do I get the experimental version? Could you run the command 'apport-collect 681054' while running the xorg-edgers bits? That will attach files with the proper versions, which will allow us to forward this bug report upstream. Another useful thing to try would be to see if disabling the phantom output makes things better. apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Since I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10, the monitor displays correctly for a couple of seconds, then turns black for a fraction of a second and then repeats the on and off sequence, making the computer nearly unusable. The whole sequence is periodic, not random. Another bug reported earlier (#606987) persists in this release as well, perhaps with the exception that restarting the computer (as opposed to turning it on after a shutdown) gives a normal logon screen. (I only used Restart a couple of times since the upgrade.)
