There seems to be an easy solution to this. The proprietary Nvidia driver uses the kernel headers to perform its job (the specifics of which I'm not quite clear on). Simply installing the new -pae kernel headers solved this problem for me. I was able to get PAE kernel to work with just installing the kernel headers. Why it is not isntalled as a dependency? The problem reappeared after today's kernel update which left me again without nvidia module compiled. BTW, for anyone who is interested in getting this to work: (quoting solution from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1741754) [The] problem is that you have the nvidia driver installed as a deb package but not the driver itself, for which you need the kernel headers. Install the package kernel-headers-blabla corresponding to your current kernel (see uname -a). Then do install --reinstall of the nvidia package or install --reinstall of the linux kernel - this will force the creation of the nvidia kernel module. Reboot. This bug still is present in 11.04. This bus is still present in 11.04. I did an update from 10.10 to 11.04 with a working binary nvidia driver. I removed the pae kernel, because of the non-working driver. After the upgrade, the pae kernel was installed, leaving me with no gui on boot. If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty and run the command: apport-collect bug-number which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting natty.
