[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765432] Re: [arrandale] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x08914160) - broadcomm wireless conflict?

2011-04-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Intriguing about the broadcom driver relationship.

I find humor in the brcm log entries:

[ 15.290813] brcm80211: module is from the staging directory, the
quality is unknown, you have been warned.

Anyway here is the first error encountered by your system:

I'm not really familiar with wireless network kernel driver debugging
but it looks like this is something in the wireless stack. There
follows a bunch of other kernel errors in the logs.

The X fault may simply be a side effect of your system being in such an
inconsistent state after the wireless failure.

** Summary changed:

- [arrandale] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x08914160)
+ [arrandale] GPU lockup (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x08914160) - broadcomm
wireless conflict?

Looks like you also have virtualbox installed... hrm

[ 239.456577] warning: `VirtualBox' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy
support in use)

hmm... well I can't really say whether the graphics driver failure is related
to the wireless driver, or perhaps some conflict with the virtualbox driver, or
what, but your system looks a bit sketchy in general.

We have a few other arrandale related bug reports, and perhaps one of
those already covers the fault you encountered. I'd suggest focusing on
solving your wireless issue first, and if that doesn't square away the
video driver (or if we don't get the video freeze solved via one of the
other bugs), then please re-file a new bug report and we'll take it from
there.

Meanwhile... if you want to just ignore the wireless problem for now,
you could try installing a newer upstream kernel, as I've noticed
they've done some further Ironlake/Arrandale development work. We've
got .debs you can use at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/.
Probably best to start with one of the v2.6.39 kernels. The drm-intel-
next-proposed kernel is a snapshot of Intel's experimental tree and has
the absolute latest bleeding edge stuff, but it can be a bit chancy so
YMMV running that.
