[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 769911] Re: System freeze after login in 11.04

2011-11-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hey sboese3,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

Unfortunately for me, even after doing everything, the problem remains.
However it's intermittent. Atleast once in a day after enabling Unity
the desktop would freeze.

2011-06-20 Thread Rockroehre
I had pre-released updates enabled from the start, so that didn't help
me. But I've given up now and installed the proprietary ATI graphics
drivers. That fixed it for me. At least I haven't encountered any
problems during the last 10 or so startups. It still takes pretty long
though until the desktop shows.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 769911] Re: System freeze after login in 11.04

2011-06-07 Thread Dave Drouin
I decided to give the latest Pre-released updates a try and voila it worked.
Fixed everything.
Synaptic Package Manager: Settings - Repositories - Updates - checked
Pre-released updates (natty proposed). Reloaded the packages, marked and
applied all upgrades. Hail Mary.

I'm running the NVidia drivers supplied with the ubuntu distribution.
No more freeze ups and the other highly annoying issue that occurred
even in failsafe mode where the computer would fail to wake up after
going into sleep mode no longer happens.

2011-05-27 Thread quequotion
I have Natty freezing after login every try.

I can only use X11 in safe mode.

Is this an Nvidia problem, a kernel vs nvidia problem or a Unity
problem?

I've tried different versions of the driver (there are three out for
natty) but nothing changed.

I haven't tried different kernels.

I don't know a thing about Unity. Who does?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 769911] Re: System freeze after login in 11.04

2011-05-13 Thread Rockroehre
Hi all,

I have the same problem with a RadeonHD graphics card (ATI Technologies
Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series).

System information:
- Natty (Ubuntu 11.04) with Unity
- clean install
- no proprietary graphics drivers installed
- added medibuntu packages to software sources (not sure if this is relevant)

I'll try to describe my case as exactly as possible:
As often as 2-3 out of 5 times, one of the following happens after logging in:
1) Natty just freezes on the splash screen. In this case, if I have the sound
turned on, I can usually hear Skype connecting (not always), but I don't see
anything. I can move my mouse pointer.
2) Natty freezes on the splash screen, which then goes black, comes back, goes
black again, ... and
  a) finally stays black or
  b) shows my desktop, but with distorted graphics, mostly no top panel. This
case is rare.
In all cases except for 2b, hard drive activity stops after a while.

While the screen is frozen (splash screen or black)
- Ctrl+F2, ... , Ctrl+F8 doesn't get me anywhere.
- Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't do anything either.

It has taken me up to 5 or 8 consecutive tries until the system boots
correctly. After that, everything works as usual.
Waking up from hibernation usually works fine, too.

Let me know if I can do anything to help narrowing down the problem or
if you need more information on my system.

nvidia-current 270.41.06-0ubunutu1

xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:2.1.17-3ubuntu7

Restarted in recovery mode and dropped into terminal mode with networking.
Ran telinit 3.
Logged in and switched to the directory containing the latest commercial NVidia
driver: 256.53
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run -uninstall results in no driver installed
 so fine.
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run complained about nouveau hence why I
installed that. Afterwards it seemed to work until it failed to build the
 kernel module.

Error log from the installer is attached.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 769911] Re: System freeze after login in 11.04

2011-05-11 Thread Dave Drouin
Yes this happened to me as well last night all of a sudden. No
resolution aside from logging in safe mode. Had been running 10.4 then
a few days ago upgraded to 10.10 then to 11.04 right after. Had no
trouble for a few days then it froze while playing EVE Online and
switching to another window that was running Firefox.

Lots of reboots and hacking around - still no luck. Tried reinstalling
the video driver via NVIDIA-Linux-256.53.run (same as I had before) but
now that fails to complete successfully. Ran it with --sanity and there
were various chksum mismatches. Tried the -uninstall and it said it
tried to uninstall what it could - reinstall still fails.

Went and marked all the NVidia related packages via Synaptic that were
already installed for reinstallation. Did nothing to help.

So I'm stuck installing EVE on my wife's iMac while I await a solution
to this annoying bug. Fortunately failsafe mode works for non-3D Gaming
related things so it's not totally disastrous.

2011-05-01 Thread David Flemström
This bug happens on my system as well. Everything worked fine in 10.10,
and now the system freezes after 5-10 seconds when I log into a window
manager that uses compositing (kwin, compiz, ...). Rebooting is the only
option.

Using xorg-edgers doesn't solve the problem. Disabling ACPI doesn't
solve the problem. There are no newer nVidia drivers available at the
time of writing.

Every 3D application I have tried so far works fine, from glxgears to
the Phoronix test suite benchmarks.

I am using an nVidia 560 Ti card.

2011-04-29 Thread LaunchpadUser
I have the same effect, but never had problems with former Ubuntu
editions like 10.10 or 10.04. As soon as I log in, the mouse pointer
changes to working (circle spins) for about 5 to 10 seconds and then
everything freezes! Rebooted a dozen times and always the same effect. I
can log in with Ubuntu (Abgesicherter Modus) (safe mode) but then
there is no window manager, i.e. all windows don't have a frame to
change the window size/position/close/etc.
