nomodeset gives you bad resolution and requires to config Xorg manually... In fact this bug was already fixed in kernel 3.5 and now working perfect to me. BTW: On the video I have the following script running on lightDM start. !/bin/sh sleep 2 xrandr --output VGA1 --off xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto xrandr --output VGA1 --right-of LVDS1 --auto With this script removed lightDM shows the same login screen on both displays. Display configuration is set correctly after login. I've just tried the kernel below (which I think includes the patch above) on Ububntu 11.10: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel- experimental/2012-04-19-precise/ The problem is fixed now. However there is a still another bug - laptop's screen is flickering/flashing when ubuntu boot logo is displayed, the external display works fine. This looks to be the same issue I am encountering with a Lenovo T520 running Fedora 16. The Xserver fails to start when there is an external monitor attached and the LCD screen is closed. The problem only occurs if the screen is closed at power on, presumably because the BIOS disables the LCD screen in those circumstances. This is running Fedora16 with kernel 3.2.2-1.fc16.x86_64. So, looks like it's trying to boot up on crtc #3, but presumably only 1 and 2 are attached. That happens well before X.org loads, so it looks to be a bug in kernel drm. Please turn on kernel graphics debugging - run 'sudo xdiagnose', it's the first checkbox. Check it, click apply, reboot, and reproduce the problem, then collect 'sudo dmesg dmesg.txt' and attach that here. That will help identify why the kernel is getting so confused by CRTC #3. There's been a significant amount of kernel work upstream to resolve problems like this in sandy bridge and ivy bridge, and presumably if you boot the 3.2 kernel the issue would be resolved. This bug also exists on Asus N53SN. After some try and fail I have one minor workaround, instead unplug-plug hdmi cable, I need to press [fn]+[F8] keys two times (this switch monitors two times) when grub menu displays. Hello Fabio, I'm afraid the already uploaded data that's all I'm able to get from my PC with 'apport-collect 814895' May be michiel is able to get more Could you please tell me what output do you expect? Probably I can give it in some another way? I'm experienced user (I'm software developer actually) so I can help with any tests/logs/low level manipulations to OS if some developer needs it to fix. I'm very keen to get it fixed. After Ubuntu completely loaded the external display can be connected without problems. At this time it is detected properly and works perfect.
