No longer able to reproduce - there was a BIOS update meanwhile - not sure if that fixed it or updated packages. I do however see a separate issue - lightdm just brings up the cursor - in the background the VT is still there and keyboard keys produce gibberish but I realize that's a different issue - will open a new one for that.
