*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 660443 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660443 Did you ever get this working? I am having the same problem. An Acer Aspire 5750G with both an onboard Intel and an Nvidia GT 540M graphics card. Installing drivers and running nvidia-xconfig seems to create a corrupt/broken xconf file - restarting machine fails. I have manually rename the xconf file in order to be able to boot back into GUI again. :'( -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/879907 Title: Problem with NVIDIA driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/879907/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 879907] Re: Problem with NVIDIA driver
The recommended as well as the current proprietary driver provided by Ubuntu do not work with my graphics card. Even though Jockey says the driver is active and in use, it actually is not used but some kind of 2D fallback. NVIDIA settings manager does not recognize my graphics card and 3D functions do not work at all. Only way to workaround this problem is to use the noveau driver but the 3D functions do not work very well. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/879907 Title: Problem with NVIDIA driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/879907/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 879907] Re: Problem with NVIDIA driver
When I remove all proprietary drivers, I can run all of these applications. So this seems to be a bug with the proprietary drivers provided for Ubuntu 11.10. Actually there is a newer driver available from the NVIDIA homepage. I might try it to see if the problem is fixed there.

** Description changed: When starting NVIDIA X-Server-Settings from the proprietary NVIDIA driver it reports: You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. After running the command 'nvidia-xconfig', Ubuntu does not boot start anymore. + + Applications and Games that require advanced graphic features (3D or 2D) + do not start anymore (for example WorldOfGoo, Penumbra:Overture). + + Haven't had any problems when running Ubuntu 11.04 with the same + applications.
