Well, that didn't last long. After a reboot I adjusted the keyboard backlight with the respective function key on the MBP and the touchpad stopped working immediately... I also noticed that it breaks the touchpad as soon as I try and open a Nautilus window via keyboard shortcut. I tried this again just now using Thunderbird; sure enough, as soon as I started to type an email address, I lost my touchpad.
