Science/Astronomy:
* Doorstep Astronomy: The Southern Triangle
http://www.space.com/spacewatch/050617_summer_triangle.html
Summer officially arrives at 2:46 a.m. EDT on June 21 (11:46 p.m. on June 20
for those living in the Pacific Time Zone). And as darkness falls this week,
the famous ?Summer Triangle? can be found low in the eastern sky.
* Terraforming: Human Destiny or Hubris?
http://www.space.com/adastra/adastra_terraforming_brody-1.html
Say the word ?terraforming? amidst a gathering of space enthusiasts and it's
like asking for trouble. And the fight usually breaks out along these lines:
One team sees the quest to replicate the biosphere of Earth on other planets as
a moral imperative, an inevitable destiny, or both. Others recoil at such
pretension, proclaiming that humans have no right to interfere with Nature as
writ large upon the face of other worlds.
* Future Giant Laser Threatened by Cuts
http://www.space.com/news/ap_050617_giant_laser.html
A giant laser being built to simulate the explosion of a hydrogen bomb is
facing funding cuts in the Senate that supporters say could kill the project
after $2.8 billion has been spent on it.
* Reaching Out to Texas Teens
http://www.space.com/adastra/adastra_nss-texas_050617.html
On Saturday June 4th, NSS-NT chapter president Ken Murphy participated in a
Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership program at the University of North Texas
(UNT). I was on a space frontiers panel with Don Garland, an astronomy
professor at UNT. It was certainly a very interesting and exciting experience.
* Setting SETI's Sights: Latest Planet Discovery Suggests New Targets
http://www.space.com/searchforlife/seti_newplanet_050616.html
SETI scientists are taking notice of the latest discovery of a Super-Earth
beyond the solar system as they fine-tune their list of stars to target in
their search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
* Image of the Day: A Moving Target
http://www.space.com/imageoftheday/image_of_day_050617.html
Comet Tempel 1 makes its way across the night sky, oblivious to an impending
collision with a NASA spacecraft.

* Weapons In Space: Dawn of a New Era

The White House is now delving into U.S. military space policy and what it sees
as the need to reshape current national space policy, a leftover
