President Museveni reportedly helped him to get the loans under a Bank of Uganda guarantee, the sources said. Indeed and I hope you read that small book by Geogre Orwell - there is no smoke without fire.'

The Police are investigating Kampala tycoon Hassan Bassajjabalaba for alleged "criminal dealings".

The director of Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) Elizabeth
Kuteesa on Friday said that three statements have been sworn in respect
 of the investigation.

But she declined to divulge the specific nature of the investigation for
 fear of stalling them.

"There are a number of investigations, not just one; and we have sworn
statements to the effect," she said. "But if we give this information
out at this time, we could help him foil the investigations."

Another source claimed that the International Police, Interpol, has also
taken interest in Mr Basajjabalaba's business operations. Earlier,
sources had said that Mr Bassajjabalaba's woes started during a recent
 visit to Italy.

He was reportedly briefly held under house arrest by Italian police at
the instigation of some 'businessmen' he owed $11 million (Shs 20
billion). It is not clear how he accumulated that huge debt.

The sources further said that while still in Italy, Mr Bassajjabalaba
paid back $6.5 million (Shs 13 billion) of the debt.

The $4.5 million (Shs 9 billion) was reportedly pending by the time he
returned three weeks ago but it has since been cleared using resources
 from the businessman's various businesses.

State House sources said that upon his return, Mr Bassajjabalaba went to
Gulu to see President Yoweri Museveni. He reportedly wanted the
president to instruct the government to bail him out of his financial
 woes.

Mr Museveni reportedly refused to meet him even after the businessman
had camped out there for several days.
Sources said that Mr Basajjabalaba is distraught. Efforts to reach him
have been futile. He did not honour an appointment to visit The Monitor
offices on Sunday to explain what is happening to his business empire.

His younger brother Nassar Bassajabalaba (Youth MP Western) also
declined to comment on Friday. Mr Basajjabalaba has reportedly
instructed Nassar to run all the family's businesses.

The police probe come in the wake of reports that Mr Bassajjabalaba is
under pressure to repay loans from the banks.

Sources said that two Kampala banks separately lent Shs 100 billion and
Shs 140 billion to Mr Basajjabalaba.

The banks are reportedly Standard Chartered and Stanbic Uganda. A source
linked to Standard Chartered said Mr Basajjabalaba had perhaps the
largest line of credit with the bank.

"I am not sure how much he owes the bank now, but his line of credit has
been about US $15 million [Shs 30 billion]. That is quite high because
even the big oil companies are usually allowed a credit line of up to
$10 million at most," the source said.

President Museveni reportedly helped him to get the loans under a Bank
of Uganda guarantee, the sources said. This was in line with the
attempts to expand and diversify Uganda's exports.
