Re: [Understand] What is working for you?
I am reading the book, *Teaching with Intention* by Debbie Miller and it is turning out to be a great companion text to the book, *To Understand*. I feel a little better about my own less than perfect performance after reading, So intently was I listening *for* thinking that mirrored my own that I'd forgotten the importance of listening *to* what kids have to say. I barely heard them because I was so determined to lead them to my way of thinking. Debbie also makes me feel better with her words, Take your time. No rushing allowed! LOL, I really need to be reminded not to rush because that is a huge impulse for me in the classroom. She continues, Most of all, I learned the importance of slowing down and being present, of taking the time to think about and develop ideas, synthesize new learning, and write about what I learned about my kids or myself as a teacher that day. And what that might mean for the days ahead. After slowing down and writing my reflections, I am sure that I will have a better sense of what is working for me. Re: [Understand] What is working for you?
Thanks to some of your advice, for the last 2 weeks I have really tried to ask the students HOW using the strategies help them to better understand their reading. I have gotten some interesting responses. I have asked this question during whole group read aloud, but I also started asking kids as I conferenced with them about their reading. I feel like only a small portion of my class can explain their thinking in this way. Quite a few students get a blank look on their faces, but it is interesting to begin a discussion about this with them and model for them how particular strategies help me understand. I hope to keep this small change in my teaching going and have it infiltrate our discussions even more... Are you taking ideas as-is? Are you adapting ideas? Please share...baby steps are just fine! There is a lot to learn in To Understand. What little (or big!) changes are you making and how are the students responding? Let's talk about it! Jennifer **Plan your next getaway with AOL Travel. Check out Today's Hot 5 Travel Deals!
