Re: ICU website

2002-02-12 Thread Patrick Rourke

I see them correctly. The problem is the font; the standard
Arial/Times don't contain all the Greek characters; notably
the polytonic. Since I use Arial Unicode MS as my default
browser font, they appear to me. Any other font that had a
full repertoire of Greek would serve as well. (It would be
convenient, of course, if Microsoft were to include a full set
 of Greek in their Arial/Times.)

Among such fonts, there is Palatino Linotype (unless MD is using combining
diacriticals; I haven't noticed), which comes bundled in Windows 2K and XP.
Others include James Kass's Code2000, David Perry's Cardo, Ralph Hancock's
Vusillus, and Jeffrey Rusten's Athena Unicode, which are all inexpensive
shareware or freeware.

For the record, I'm getting the Margites quote quite well when I switch my
encoding of the digest messages over to UTF-8 in OE 5.5 / Windows 98 SE with
Arial Unicode MS (provided by Office 2K); and I am quite jealous that Mark
Davis is using it, precluding me from doing so. I feel like Margites nearly
every day, especially when eavesdropping on this list.

[The original quote is basically he knew many skills, but knew them all
badly - erga is one of those hard-to-translate words, it means basically
work in the most broad sense, while skills is a better translation of
tekhne, which is not used in the Margites fragment - probably one of the
opening lines of the lost Homeric parody *The Margites*, attributed to Homer
in antiquity; MD's newer quote is know yourself, which was inscribed on
the Temple to Apollo at Delos.]

Re: ICU website

2002-02-11 Thread Markus Scherer

The ICU website continues to be at http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/
I suppose that there was a temporary networking problem somewhere.

The fact that you sometimes see internal machine names like www-124 or www-126 is due
to some misconfiguration. The ICU team does not itself control the server
configuration.
Most of the time, you can avoid seeing these internal machine names by using trailing
slashes ('/') at the end of URLs like above.

Does anyone know if the web address for ICU has changed? My URL,
http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/, gives me a name lookup error.

Wait until we can find out what happened. It was not supposed to
change.
