[UC] Trash / Courtesy request

2002-06-21 Thread Elizabeth F. Campion

Here is a note I send to my tenants.
Feel free to copy, cut, paste and or forward if it helps.
It looks best as an attachment or Word Page, but I thought more people
could use it in the format below. I welcome private replies which may
improve the note or add more re-use ideas.
Best!

Dear Tenants,

Please be considerate when disposing of trash or recyclables.

Trash pick up is every week at Curbside.
Trash should be in sturdy, sealed, plastic bags.
Place Bags at curb the night before, and
check the curb when you come home
and pick-up any stray litter and return any
cans to the alley.

Recycling should be placed in BLUE plastic buckets.
Mixed PAPER in one can
GLASS and METAL in another.
PLASTICS and Cardboard in others.
Paper, Glass and Metal go to the curb
with Trash on alternate weeks.
Plastics and Corrugated Cardboard may be
delivered to the Firehouse Market
(50th and Baltimore)
on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays
(between 10 AM and 12:30 PM).

Here is the link to information supplied by:
   The University of Pennsylvania
   Office of Off Campus Living
   http://www.upenn.edu/resliv/ocl/assistance/trash.html

Evaluate things that you do not need and arrange to:

Re-Use -
Donate clothes, books, furniture to
Non-profits (Thrift Shops, Schools)
"2nd Mile Center"
on 45th near Locust
is a good place to drop things.

Re-use store bags as trash can liners.

Recycle -
- Newspaper, Mixed Paper, Glass and Metal
Alternate weeks, on Trash Day, in UC
Every Week, on Trash Day, in Center City

Compost -
Kitchen waste (but not oil or meats)
YES to: eggs, vegetables, tea and coffee.
This leads to great soil.

Refuse -
Plastics above #2 (Number in Triangle on bottom)
Irreparable appliances.

This note is not a fault finding expedition, just some suggestions to
keep things neat and fresh for all. Please make sure everything is in a
proper and air tight plastic bag before putting it into a can. Anything
which has the potential to get really rank (fish for example) should be
wrapped in paper (recycle your newspaper) and double bagged.
If you use the plastic "handle" bags which come from supermarkets, note
that they do not tie with good seals and often have small holes along the
seams, so it is best to double bag those if they contain any food items.

Also, please try to segregate recyclables (Cans, Bottles and Paper) in
the blue bins.
Please remember to take your plastics to the FIREHOUSE market on the
First and Third Saturday mornings of each month. It is a great market
and the proceeds fund scholarships for local kids. The Coffee store sells
fresh and unusual beans and has marvelous daily specials.

Please remember that cans and bottles should be emptied and rinsed before
being placed in the blue cans as they are only collected every other
week.

All the best!
Liz

Re: [UC] Recycling -- the fickle finger of fate

2002-06-21 Thread vivianne t. nachmias

here's another idea, how about a prize for the three blocks that recycle
the most... however I see that that also is impractical, since you'd have
to weight them or see the bulk and it could go to a fraternity that has a
huge beer party...
oh well, it is as most things, try persuasion...
