I would love to know when that drum circle in Clark Park is going to get
together, if anyone knows. It's something I've always wanted to try.

[UC] RE: method of avoiding break ins

2003-11-05 Thread Mayer, Ann

To the
list:

For
what it is worth, I have never had a break in in any of the four cars I
have owned since 1980,
all of
which have been parked on UCity streets, since I lack a
garage.
All
three were old used cars and pretty beat up looking.  (One did not start
out being that beat up
looking, but was quickly "customized" by bad drivers
and worse parkers hitting and scraping it
and some random doses of vandalism, like smashing
my hubcaps.)
I
assume that it "pays" to have a crappy car.  I had an old rust bucket
Toyota that I actually
saw a
homeless guy stare at with scorn -- as if he were thinking "I'd never be
caught dead driving
a
wreck like that!"

So, if
you can bear the humiliation of being seen to drive an old heap, you may, like
me, be lucky
in
conveying the impression that your car window is not worth the trouble of
breaking since nothing
of
value could possibly be lurking inside.

I agree, you shouldn't keep valuables in plain sight, but not having
them in
plain sight won't necessarily protect you from a break-in.

Maty,

Keeping valuables out of sight is just to minimize the risk of a
break-in, not prevent.None of these maneuvers prevents a damn thing,
just minimizes the risk of whatever they plan to do when they take that

Well, this is theoretically good advice except that when they broke into
my
car a week ago (4600 block of Cedar), there was nothing valuable in
plain
sight, unless you count the Britax car seat, which thank God they didn't

take. They went thru the glove compartment and didn't steal anything,
they
didn't seem to see the spare change compartment because that was not
touched
(about $3 worth of change). They did steal an air pump that I kept in
the

Since you did a lot of the leg work on
this...what is the penalty for not having your "animal running at large"? Is
there a fine? Is your dog taken away from you? Imprisonment?

Well, this is theoretically good advice except that when they broke into my
car a week ago (4600 block of Cedar), there was nothing valuable in plain
sight, unless you count the Britax car seat, which thank God they didn't
take. They went thru the glove compartment and didn't steal anything, they
didn't seem to see the spare change compartment because that was not touched
(about $3 worth of change). They did steal an air pump that I kept in the
trunk for emergencies (thus, no point having it out of the trunk) but left
the cheap stroller that I also keep for emergencies. I had a similar

the leprechaun presence that helps to make UniCity so unique. Perhaps a

to. Does anyone know if there's something similar in West Philly?
There's a drum circle that plays in Clark Park by the Dickens statue
every so often. There's no schedule, and they appear very irregularly.
Sort of like leprechauns.

RE: [UC] Alert: Another Car Breakin at 48th & Beaumont

2003-11-05 Thread Dubin, Elisabeth

Someone "broke" in
to my roomate's car on the 4600 block of Hazel.  I say "broke" because the
window was already broken from last year's break-in.  Anyway, they stole a
bunch of tapes (no value except personal) and for some reason her owner's manual
for the car.  DUH.

  Breakin at 48th & Beaumont
Someone broke into my sister's car last
night.  They used a screw driver to open the trunk and stole a lot of
clothes that she had in there.  They also broke the read window and
searched the car for valuables.  I've reported this to the Police and to
UCD.  This is going to persist until this/these people are caught.
They had to have spent a lot of time going through my sister's car, which was
parked beneath the street lamp.  Did anyone see or hear anything?
There was a lot of stuff and it would not be easy just to make away with
  it.

  Any help would be appreciated.

[UC] Cafe Clave (was: New Coffeehouse)

2003-11-05 Thread Charles H. Buchholtz
From: Wilma de Soto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
   Date: Mon, 03 Nov 2003 18:43:24 -0500

Am I to understand that one can actually get real Latin coffee or Cafe
   Cubano there?

I asked, and the guy I talked to had never heard of Cafe Cubano. He
seemed excited by the idea, and said that he would, "get on the horn
with the owner's father, who is from Cuba."

I asked about the music, and he said that they've had two bands play
so far, and would have more. Bigger name acts would be widely
advertised. I got the impression that there isn't a "house band" or
regularly scheduled music.

I miss Manhattan, where as a kid I would go out every weekend and ride
around Central Park on my bike until I found a conga band to listen
to. Does anyone know if there's something similar in West Philly?

[UC] Missing wallet

2003-11-05 Thread MLamond
Last night my son Scott Ratigan lost his wallet while rushing about, working
on the election. He took his wallet out of his pocket and put it into a
knapsack he was carrying and then ran from the polling place at 46th & Chester to
his apartment at 47th & Baltimore, and when he arrived at the apartment, he had
no wallet. It must have fallen out of the knapsack.

At this point, after lots of searching, we are guessing that someone picked
it up, removed the cash and threw it back down - maybe into a front yard or
bushes or something, but this is the worst time of year to look for lost objects,
with all the leaves on the ground! If anyone spots it, he would really love
to get his ID back. It's a green canvas-type wallet.

[UC] Dinner and Discussion of Neighborhood Issues

2003-11-05 Thread Joe Clarke

I'm not certain if this was already
posted.   Joe Clarke

Community Issues Dinner, Tuesday, November 11 at
6:30 pmwith Eric Goldstein, Director of University City
DistrictAbbraccio initiates a series of dinners with a chance to
meet people who are in the news in our neighborhood. Based on the White Dog
café’s wonderful “Table Talk” series, these dinners and talks are focused solely
on issues of the University City-West Philadelphia area. For our first
dinner, we are pleased to welcome Eric Goldstein from the University City
District. The UCD has spearheaded initiatives to make improvements at both the
Baltimore Ave. and Lancaster Ave. commercial corridors, but there has been some
resistance to these efforts. Dinner is at 6:30pm, the talk and Q&A
are from 7:30-8:30pm. Price for a three-course dinner and the talk is $20.00 –
price includes gratuity. Reservations are necessary! A few spaces for
Dessert, coffee and the talk may be available for $6 each. Eric promises to hang
around at the end of the program for some more private
discussion.
