[UC] Machinist

2004-12-14 Thread BGAndersen
Hi everyone -

The same force of nature that converted an antique chair into firewood last
year has done it again. I have an antique metal ornament that needs fixin.

Specifically, I have to have a thin metal rod rethreaded (with a small die) and
the hole it went in to tapped to remove the broken rod and restore the internal
threads.

Can anyone recommend a good machinist who can fix this piece for me?

Thanks!

[UC] [Fwd: Fwd: Traffic Advisory]

2004-12-14 Thread Gail Defendorf
Please be aware that on 12/15, 12/22 and 12/29 there will be a major
concrete pour at the School of Veterinary Medicine construction site
located at 38th and Woodland Ave. This activity will occur between the
hours of 7am until 7pm. Approximately 100 cement trucks will be unloaded
on each of those dates. The trucks will stage on Woodland Ave in front
of the Woodland cemetery. Traffic lanes will be reduced in the area of
the construction site. It is suggested that an alternate route be used
on those dates to avoid delays. University police will be on location
for traffic control.

[UC] Do you depend on SEPTA?

2004-12-14 Thread Krfapt

If you depend on SEPTA to get to
and from work, school, doctors' appointments, social activities, etc you should
be concerned about the service cutbacks and fare increases being considered by
the company. The problem, of course, is quite complex and what is being
termed a crisis has a lot to do with the way state funds are allocated
to this vital public transportation system. However, the actions being
considered by the SEPTA Board of Directors will create hardships for many
Philadelphia residents and won't resolve the situation. While they may be
intended more to force the State Assembly and the Governor to take appropriate
action, the people who depend on the buses, trolleys, and trains will bear the
brunt of the political dispute â at least in the short term.A protest is
being organized to let the people be heard. If this is important to you, it is
important that you participate â and not just figure that someone else will do
it for you.Meet other protesters at 15th & Market at 2 pm on
Thursday (12/16) and walk with the group to the Board meeting at 1234 Market St.

RE: [UC] Holiday Tree Lighting in Cedar Park - Thursday, Dec. 16, 5:30 PM

2004-12-14 Thread Jonathan Cass

I'm not so sure if that's a good idea.
I attended the tree lighting ceremony at City Hall and the Mayor droned on
forever.  I, admittedly, could not hear his remarks very well since the
sound system was terrible, but I wasn't inspired.  Hopefully, he will keep
it short!

RE: [UC] Are You Aware of UPenn's 'First Thursday' public meetings?

2004-12-14 Thread J. Matthew Wolfe
I am familiar with the First Thursday meetings. They are promoted at the
very least to community groups in West Philly. I can not speak to the
breadth of the promotion, but they are not hiding them. In attendance are
representatives of most of the West Philly/U City community groups, but
there are others and anyone can attend.

I do not recall any discussion of demolishing Convention Hall. I would have
remembered that and certainly would have expressed an opinion against it. I
cannot say, however, that I am at every meeting or at the meetings from
start to finish. I do remember raising the issue when someone from Penn was
speaking regarding all of Penn's projects. My point was that they botched
the PGH site and I did not want to see the same on the Civic Center site.
The response was that Penn understood the problems with PGH, but CHOP had a
different view and liked the "walled city" approach to design. While I do
not believe that minutes are taken, there are agendas. Again, I do not
remember seeing anything about Convention Hall on the agenda. That does not
mean it was not there, but I do not remember.

I hope that this is helpful.

Hello,

I'm curious about Penn's 'First Thursday' community meetings, alluded to
by Penn Community Relations Director Glenn Bryan in a University City
Review article in the November 24 edition. Are you familiar with these
meetings? Are they well-promoted? How many people are typically in
attendance? What is the nature of the meetings?

I'm wondering because of Mr. Bryan's claim that there was "no real
opposition or major feedback" to Penn's plans to demolish Convention Hall
and the Commercial Museum, as he is quoted in the Review.

I would also be very interested in hearing, by private email if it's
inappropriate to clutter this list, from anyone who attended a First
Thursday meeting where UPenn's plans for the Civic Center properties were
discussed.

I ran a poll in the University City section of PhillyBlog and was
surprised that out of 12 poll responses, not one respondent was aware of
the meetings. That surprised me, as the folks posting in that forum are
generally fairly much involved in the community. On the other hand I do
personally know one person who is aware and has attended some of these
meetings.
