Re: [UC] FYI, West Philly = Sarajevo, According to the AP
Several years ago, Action News did a piece on a chef who trained in Paris and then came back to Philly. He showed a variety of desserts, one of which was called chocolate salami. The dessert was chocolate and pralines, cut like slices of salami. When the piece ended the males at the news desk were all snickering. Lisa Thomas Laurey looked around a little annoyed and said, What? It looks delicious. I'd have some chocolate salami. The entire studio lost control laughing, Dave Roberts almost ruptured. They immediately went to a commercial. Philly news at it's best. :Pete On Feb 18, 2005, at 10:15 PM, Mark Krull wrote: Face it the local news is crap!! -Mark -Original Message- From: Anthony West Sent: Feb 18, 2005 9:04 PM To: univcity@list.purple.com Subject: Re: [UC] FYI, West Philly = Sarajevo, According to the AP Cobbs Creek, the neighborhood (as opposed to Cobbs Creek, the waterway) lies between 52nd Street and the city limits at the creek of that ilk. It is University City's immediate neighbor to the west. Its northern boundary is Market Street and its southern boundary is Baltimore Avenue. It contains some beat-up blocks, lots of perfectly decent petty-bourgeois Philly rowhouse blocks, and a few nicer houses alongside the park. There isn't a speck of it that's as bad as Mantua, say, or North Central, or large strips of canonically cutesy South Philly. Wilson Goode lived in Cobbs Creek while he was mayor, and he could have afforded to live anywhere. Cobbs Creek became almost entirely Black around the '50s, which I suspect was the SOLE reason the AP twit found the living conditions there appalling. Invariably -- you can win bets in bars with this one -- inexperienced suburban whites perceive any urban streetscape with Black faces as appalling. And they are entirely unaware that is what they are reacting to. Cobbs Creek (the neighborhood) is part of West Philly. West Philly includes everything between Cobbs Creek (the creek), City Line Ave., the Schuylkill River, the VA Hospital, and Baltimore Ave. Print journalists may be better at neighborhood-defining. Broadcast journalists, and some photojournalists too, tend to be image-obsessed airheads with zero sense of social geography. Most of them couldn't tell St. Mark's Square, West Philly from St. Mark's Square, Venice, and they rely on their van driver to tell them where they are while they adjust their makeup. (Their producers, of course, are entirely different!) It is quite comical to watch the roving action newsreaders on local newscasts try to apply neighborhood names to the intersections they have been dispatched to. Oftentimes they're off by miles. -- Tony West I'm not sure where Cobbs Creek is, Need someone to watch your pet while you are away? [UC] mover recommendations
We are doing a local move within University City and considering AA Atkinson Movers and Havertown Movers for both packing and moving. We already have great references for Mambo, but does anyone have experience with the others? Thanks. Ann and Patrick You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. [UC] Sen Santorum coming to Drexel Tues Feb 22
Hello Another FYI from me. Sen. Santorum is coming to speak about Social Security privatization. If anyone can show that would be great Contact is Brad Levenson -Mark Press Release: Drexel Democrats To Protest After Drexel University and Bennett S. LeBow College Of Business Decline To Offer Democratic Presence at Santorum Social Security Event. It has come to the attention of the Drexel University College Democrats that Senator Rick Santorum will be speaking on the matter of Social Security reform as part of the Public Policy Forum of the Office of Government and Community Relations and the Guest Lecture Series of the Bennett S. LeBow College of Business. The event will take place at 10 AM, Tuesday, February 22nd, at Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets). Given the partisan nature of his platform and rhetoric, we feel that this forum will be lacking without a counter viewpoint. We believe that Senator Santorum will be using this academic forum as a guise for the Bush Administration’s national tour to promote social security privatization. Given Senator Santorum’s highly polemic rhetoric and close ties to the Bush Administration’s agenda, we fear that he would use this opportunity to merely lobby the Social Security Reform bill, rather than to educate the Drexel community. Because of these concerns, the Drexel Democrats have respectfully requested of the Bennett S. LeBow College of Business that an elected Democratic official or academic may be invited to the forum to address and correct partisan rhetoric. Surely, academic discourse would be elevated with multiple viewpoints, in order to allow for Drexel’s students to think critically about issues pertaining to their future. Regrettably, Drexel University has refused to meet this request. The Drexel Democrats believe that as this request has not be met, the organization has the right to and will organize against said event beginning at 9 AM on Tuesday, February 22nd, directly in front of Behrakis Grand Hall. The Drexel Democrats have requested information on the university’s regulations on this matter, and will abide to and respect all regulations that the university may have regarding the right to organize and protest. In addition to the Drexel Democrats, other local democrats groups and progressive grassroots organizations will be in attendance, including but not limited to the University of Pennsylvania Democrats, Philly For Change, and the Action Alliance of Senior Citizens.
