My personal recommendation -- as a former political editor who used to
specialize in Pennsylvania judicial politics, but also as a busy voter with
little time to research and decide about these individuals, about whom it is
impossible to learn much -- is as follows:

Always vote NO on judicial retention. Every single judge, every single time.
 NO.

The reasoning is that the cards are immeasurably stacked in favor of judges'
winning retention races. If any judge has EVER been defeated for retention,
I can't remember it. So if you vote NO on retaining a judge who happens,
unbeknownst to you, to be great -- relax, it won't hurt him. The only way
your NO vote could actually have an impact on a race would be if a judge
were so outstandingly abominable that he had actually overwhelmed voter
apathy and ignorance with his awfulness. If yours was the deciding vote that
pushed such a clod off the bench -- well, it probably would be a good thing.

So from now on, make your voting task easier. Just say NO to judges. It's
 the right thing to do.

[UC] claw foot tub

2005-04-02 Thread Stephen Fisher
Hi,
I have a claw foot tub that doesn't have any feet. Anyone have some
claw feet laying around? If not, anyone know where one might purchase
feet for a claw foot?

Thanks,
Stephen

[UC] University City List Butt Survey

2005-04-02 Thread Benseraglio2

In a message dated 4/1/2005 4:37:43 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
I thought that if you had to publicly postphotographs of say, your ass, on a weekly basis it might get you into thegym and back into fighting shape.
Piggybacking on J Cass's excellent suggestion, I have inaugurated the University City List Butt Survey. This will work in a similar manner to the previous University City List Age Survey. UC List subscribers will send a jpg of their butts to the list, or, if squeamish, to me personally. I will post all entries on the University City Butt Survey page:

http://rosslynnbender.org/ucbutt.html

I've already received over a dozen entries. Understandably most subscribers will wish to keep photos of their butts anonymous, so I have in some cases erased the faces of overeager, exhibitionist submitters. Also, be aware that I will *not* post pictures of butts calculated to arouse prurient interest. So discretion is advised.

Now this could work in a number of ways. We could have a contest to "Guess the UC Butt", although on second thought this might have unfortunate effects, as some of the rowdier list members would probably make insulting suggestions just to try to have a bit of fun. Perhaps a better idea would be simply to have a vote on the "Best UC Butt". As I receive more entries, I'll try to devise a fair and equitable way to conduct such a vote on the list.

Re: [UC] Slavery Disclosure Bill

2005-04-02 Thread Jedidiah McKee
I'm thankful for the history lesson this string has
generated. However, slavery in modern times was also
mentioned, by Brian Siano, I believe.

By some estimates, there are more slaves alive in the
world today than there have been at any point before
in history. Many of them are used in difficult /or
dangerous mining or harvesting operations. There is
also the sex slave trade, of which many, if not most,
could be classified as children (since 21-year-olds
have more rights). This trade exploded with the fall
of the Berlin Wall, with poor and desperate people
trying to get out of Eastern Europe and into the
golden West. Sex slavery in the West is different
than in the East; virginity is not the commodity in
Senator's sex toys in North America that it is in
Bangkok. By the time some CEO has paid $35,000 for a
slave, she has been systematically drugged, underfed,
beaten and raped repeatedly, until all she (or he) has
the energy to do is obey orders. It's scarcely
surprising that such a slave's working life is only
two years (and they're unlikely to live much longer),
and there are tens of thousands of more slaves being
taken every year. It is my belief that this practice
will only fade slowly, as simulacra and virtual
reality slowly reduce the demand, and as politics
reduce the supply. As it is now, there are too many
people in power who benefit fom it, both here in the
US and in Mexico, as well as the Eastern European
cartels that supply the slaves.

So if you wanna stand up on your soapbox and work for
justice, I would start there.

Jed McKee.

PS Much of my specific info on this is from a January
25, 2004 New York Times Sunday Magazine article, and
and interview on WHYY radio Fresh Aire program on
Monday of that week. (My specific dates may be a
little off, but they're close to that.)

 Salutations, gentlefolk,

Mr. Siano mentioned sanctions against 'collaborators
 with the British during the
Revolution'. The turth, however, is even stranger.

Many Tories - King George III's partisans - had
 their property (including a good
chunk of downtown Philly) confiscated during the
 revolution, and sold to finance
the Continental war effort. In the Treaty of Paris
(the US copy is in the
American Philosophical Society library on 5th St) we
 promised to compensate
them. Congress, however, never appropriated the
 money for this.

Foward two hundred years or so, and in the
Helms-somebody Act we insist that the
Cubans must pay up for what they nationalized in
 '61. Of course the United
Empire Loyalists (think Daughters of the American
 Revolution, turned inside out)
have been keeping close track of the amounts due
 their ancestors, plus interest.

Will a future Film Festival see a remake of
Passport to Pimlico set in our
neighborhood - but this time a documentary ?

 Yours, John Desmond
