Found friendly, completely gray cat with yellow eyes. Very soft fur, kind
of fluffy, especially in the tail.

It hangs around 208 N. 36th Street, where it is being fed each night on the
stoop.

Most of the inexpensive (relatively speaking, of course) horizontally
extensible bars you can get at places like Monarch Hdw, Home Depot, etc now
have:
* screw holes on two faces of the frames so you can attach from the
side them "in" the window opening (below the upper sash -- protecting the lower
when it's opening and preventing the upper from being opened) or front-to-back
inside the building on the window frame molding.
* a means to unhook the bars from the inside on one side, and swing
them open (ability to open bars on bedroom windows is required by the
Philadelphia Fire Code for rental properties); the hooking mechanism is
reasonably safe
from someone reaching in and unhooking it from the outside, but you can always
add some kind of lock -- just keep the key nearby.
* If you use these inside on the window frame molding, consider getting
two for each opening, one for the top and one for the bottom sash.
You might also consider getting dummy TV cameras -- the models with
battery-operated flashing LEDs can be especially effective in alleys. They're
quite
realistic -- and small (the real ones are very small, nowadays, too. You can
get
them on the internet -- find suppliers with a quick Google search.

Always at your service and ready for a diatribe -- er, dialog.

I know what you're talking about, Lew. I also know what "heaven" means,
more or less, but I'm not persuaded anybody has a simple, surefire
method for finding it.

Viciousness is a useless attribute for watchdogs. Their power lies in
noisiness, keen hearing and light sleeping. A good watchdog is right up
there with good window bars, except your bars may not drive your
neighbors crazy all day while you're away.

I worry about fire safety too, Liz. I figure, if the fire's in the
front, leave by the rear door, and vice versa. Not perfect, perhaps, but
what is?

I have (perhaps naively) felt protected by my vicious dogs, and I
didn't like the look or feel of the outside bars, so I removed the
metal bars from my window.
I offered them to Cassidy a few years ago when he was getting scarred
by the seemingly endless cycle of crime that hovered around his crib,
but he never followed up and since he deserted the UCLipServ, I'm
retracting my offer to him and you are welcome to them them if you are
considering going this route.
I want to find a source for the style of security bars that mounts on
the inside and has a locking system that is simple for the occupant to
open in the case of a fire but impossible for a thief to operate from
the outside.

You can get a huge variety of custom made security bars and even
decorative iron work and fencing at

GUIDO

They manufacture, and have a showroom, in SW Philly (maybe 63rd near
Bartram or Woodland?).

They are not the cheapest and not the most expensive.
You can get iron security in almost any size, color or sizing that you
want.

They can create custom pieces while using a lot of mass produced
components, and
they are a good sized company, so there are some economies of scale and
some veracity to delivery dates.

They are also a good source for the grills that go over doors and for
security storm-screen doors.

Personally I am more afraid of the potential threat of house fire than
criminal, so I removed all our bars, and rely on Fluffy and Dobby for
safety and companionship.

Best!
Liz

hi, all,

my house on the 4700 block of hazel was broken into last night, or rather
early this morning. someone cut the screen of an open window and took
electronics and items in the living room, then let him/herself out via the
front door. no one was hurt or injured, and no one saw the burglar, as far
as i know.

i know this kind of crime has been happening a lot over the last few months
in UC, so just wanted to tell people.

what kinds of precautions are people taking to prevent this sort of crime?

2007-09-23 Thread pmuyehara

 Sarah,
Sorry to hear of your burglary.? I'm wondering about the location of the
window that was cut and whether anyone was home.
? Liz had posted earlier about one of her neighbors confronting burglars at
his front door in the middle of the night who had been ringing the bell first
to see if anyone was home.? (The 4600 block night patrol helped guide
responding police to apprehend one of the fleeing burglars.)
? It's a hassle, especially when its really hot, but we close all of our
first floor windows at night, as well as those above the porch roof.

Paul

If a first-floor window, have you also considered bars for your windows?
Bars + open windows is one option, no bars + closed windows is another.
