[UC] Rally for libraries, Tuesday

2009-01-11 Thread Glenn moyer

Dear citizens,

On Tuesday, the coalition to save the libraries will hold a rally outside the
northeast corner of city hall, 3:30 PM.

www.coalitiontosavethelibraries.blogspot.com

At the conclusion, the People’s Court will deliver a contempt of court citation
to defendant, Michael Nutter, for defying the December 2008 ruling in
commonwealth court.

There will be speakers, theatre, and music. Citizens are urged to bring drums
and noisemakers.

The Citation: Judge Fox ruled that defendant Nutter cannot usurp the authority
of the legislative branch of our city government, city council. The defendant
is appealing the ruling and law while continuing to refuse to allow public
hearings. Without a legitimate case to privatize or destroy libraries, I can
see why the defendant is willing to do what is necessary to avoid the prying
eyes of the citizens of Philadelphia.

Contempt: Defendant has engaged in retaliation against the plaintiffs, the
people of Philadelphia. Pending his appeal of the law, and our system of checks
and balances with 3 independent branches of government, defendant has moved
forward with plans against the 11 libraries, that he wants to close, and
broadened his retaliation to include all branch libraries.

In latest news, the employees of the library are under a gag order and are
justifiably afraid of additional retaliation. Branch libraries are about to
be placed on a 3 day per week schedule. And instead of allowing a library to
open with 3 employees, libraries will not be allowed to open without 4.

Please come to city hall, Tuesday, 3:30 PM to protect our libraries, and 3
branch system of government. The people, united, can never be defeated!

Glenn

Re: [UC] BIG ups to 311

2009-01-11 Thread Al Airone
Not sure 311 would be able to provide the info anyway - the trolleys are SEPTA,
and are not a City service as described on the 311 web site. It would be
nice if 311 were able to provide such services as well, but clearly it requires
a lot more to accomplish it (integration with an entirely separate public
entity, for starters). Even KYW doesn't get that kind of info out on a timely
basis.

My first experience with 311 was rather discouraging. I called to find out
if the trolleys were running in the tunnel (and to see how the 311 system
works!) and after listening for more than ten minutes to the message telling me
how important my call was I gave up. This was around 9 AM on a weekday.
Obviously, not important enough...

I used the City's new 311 info number on Wed to report a suspected

After waiting through cycles of a canned message reminding me that my call
was important and encourging me to continue to wait, the operator was cheerful
and helpful.
She also cautioned me that, although she was submitting the report
immediately, it could take numerous weeks before the car disappeared.
The car was gone by Thursday afternoon!
Hopefully someone got their stolen car back.
I guess I can rake up those leaves now.
One thing was a little challenging: when I entered 311 into my cell phone
it wouldn't dial the number because it thought I was referencing a speed-dial
number.
If anyone else has this problem, try my solution: I entered 311 into my
phone's directory under info and then called info. That worked for me.
I think that 311 is to be used instead of the old 215-MU6-1776 number.

[UC] free piece of furniture

2009-01-11 Thread Mbkudera
I've put out a small wooden cabinet (or diaper changing table) on the east
side of 48th st. between Springfield and Windsor (in front of 921). It needs
a little dusting and sticker removal but is in otherwise good condition.

2009-01-11 Thread Joe Clarke

I just checked on a warning that was sent to me and it is accurate as
per snopes. comSee web address.

There are many different listings related to the election, the
inauguration, democrats, etc. that are listed. It's worth reading to
avoid trouble.

I am aware of that, and I would not have been surprised if they had just
transferred me to SEPTA for an answer -- I was interested to see if they
happen to have that sort of information. The point I was trying to make is
that after waiting over ten minutes nobody had taken my call; in New York
the answer to 311 is virtually instantaneous, it rings once and a real
person answers the call.

That would be the Department of Licenses and Inspections. You can find its
number on the city¹s website.
