I am so sorry to hear of this traumatic incident. ...and it IS
traumatic--a sweet dog i was walking once was attacked by another
crazy dog who WOULD NOT let go...even though the owner picked up the
hind legs, I clubbed it over the head with my sneaker and the sweet
dog that was chomped into was screaming in pain.

Cops came and took a report (bystanders would not let the owner get
away), but sadly, no money was ever able to be recouped by the sweet
dog's owners. That dog required 3 surgeries at Penn, over $1,000.

Is euthanasia the answer? I really don't know...I'd like to hear all

According to the PPD officers that took my information and filed the
report, there is little that they can do as this is regarded as a
civil or property crime. They also said that I should contact the
SPCA so that they have record of the attack. Aside from filing a
lawsuit (and the owner did not look like he could afford our vet
bills) it seems that we have little recourse. I want to ensure that
this animal is euthanized so that it does no more harm, but I am
unsure where to begin. If anyone has any ideas about where to start
please contact me via email at steveandm...@hotmail.com.

I have also posted some photographs of the dog/ owner I took before

If you live, work, walk near 47th and Chester I recommend watching
for and giving the owner a clear path. Judging by the way he
handled his animal after the incident he knows a thing or two about
dog fights.

 Neighbors,
 Our
dog was viciously mauled late this afternoon.
The dog that attacked (a big, dark, brindle pit bull terrier) was
tied up outside
Salt and Pepper at 47th and Chester, but broke its leash, raced
across
the street and attacked our dog. As we wait to learn about the
extent of his injuries from the good folks at PennVet, I wanted to
warn everyone to be especially
cautious, especially those with small children and animals. Thanks
to the kindness of a few strangers the police have identified the
owner. Please be careful.

 Steve.

I feel that the problem isn't really with the dog, but with the owner,
who most likely trained this dog to fight. Since euthanasia of the
owner isn't possible, ;-) , I think the owner should be heavily fined
and the dog taken from him. I think that, unfortunately, the dog
should be euthanized since he is clearly vicious.

The larger question is how to curtail dog fighting and change people's
attitudes toward it. That is a tough one. Will enforcing laws against
dog fighting, aggressively going after the perpetrators, and laying
heavy fines or even some jail time on them work? I don't know. As if
the Philadelphia police could even make this a priority.

Maybe educating children at a young age? Going into the schools with
(friendly) dogs and talking about dog fighting?

What *can* be enforced easily is a requirement that all dogs should wear a
muzzle in public. Big fines could accomplish that in no time.
