[UC] Robbery last night at 48th Trinity Place

2011-09-12 Thread Joe Clarke
About 8:45 pm Sunday. Saw a police car and a Drexel Security car pulled
over at the corner of 48th Trinity. The police took a young man to the
18th district to give a report. I asked the other two what had happened and
they told me that it was a robbery and the victim just went with the police
to give a statement. Everyone please keep your eyes open and stay
vigilant.

[UC-Announce] Sat 9/17: Latin American chamber music at Crossroads

THE DALI QUARTET with CHUCK HOLDEMAN
Chamber music from Latin America and beyond.
Performance also features the US premiere of Holdeman's Quintetto for String
Quartet and Bassoon

Big, lush sound. Handled the Latin American music with authoritative ease. -
The Morning Call

With an artist's grace and a Caribbean soul, Philadelphia's Dalí Quartet is
today's freshest voice in Classical and Latin-American music. The members of
the Quartet include alumni of Venezuela's social and music education movement
El Sistema and graduates of the Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana
University Bloomington and the Simon Bolivar Conservatory in Caracas,
Venezuela. The Lincoln Journal Star has called the Dali's music stunningly
played, and the Allentown Morning Call has praised their big lush sound and
authoritative ease.

Saturday's program includes music by Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla, and Turina,
tangos, boleros, and canciones by Gardel, Almaran, and G. M. Rodriguez, and the
North American premiere of Chuck Holdeman's Quintetto for String Quartet and
Bassoon.

Chuck Holdeman studied bassoon and composition at the Curtis Institute, was
principal bassonist of the Delaware Symphony for 24 years and is currently a
member of Philadelphia's new music ensemble Relache.

[UC] re: thanks for all the advice/offers on the flooding problem

2011-09-12 Thread Ann Mayer
To all:

I did not manage to get back to all with thanks for their helpful ideas on
my basement flood, so I thank everyone here.

Luckily, the flooding rapidly subsided on Thursday afternoon -- as if the
water was being sucked back into the cracks of the
floor from whence in came in.

Considering various options now. Meanwhile, I appreciate those who took
time to make offers and suggestions.

iPraxis looking for volunteers to serve as ‘Scienteers’ at Lea Elementary.
Scienteers act as mentors to a small group of students by sharing personal
experiences, career opportunities in STEM fields, and by helping grow
curiosity and interest in science and technology. Volunteers also help guide
students as they work to complete a thorough science fair project. The time
requirement for Scienteers is about 1-1.5 hours per week for an 8 week
period. Times to meet with students vary but usually take place during or
right after the school day, depending on the teacher's needs.

Upon completion, students present their projects to guest judges at a school
Science Fair. Select students then go on to compete in the city-wide G.W.
Carver Science Fair (Lea students mentored by Scienteers won awards last
year). Winners and mentors are also recognized at a celebratory event we
hold each spring called iFunction. iPraxis also facilitates Career Days and
special science presentation at its partner schools.

Background checks are required but reimbursed for the Scienteers during
Orientation. Orientation is scheduled as Scienteers sign up, dependent on
their schedules. During the orientation, iPraxis goes over Science Fair
project components and helpful insights to working with students.

iPraxis is a non-profit located in the University City Science Center. Its
mission is to create and foster opportunities that engage Philadelphia's
underrepresented communities in science and technology through education,
entrepreneurship, and advocacy.

To become a Scienteer, please contact Meagan Hopkins-Doerr at iPraxis
mea...@ipraxis.org. Please also forward this opportunity to anyone you know
that may be interested. Thanks!

[UC] news flash

You know those stores some people who didn't know what they were doing
built on spec on the northwest corner of 45th Walnut? The ones that nobody
ever rented -- and that actually aren't really finished on the inside?

A For Sale sign just went up where there used to be a for lease sign.

I feel bad for the people who put in their money (and their hopes) and will
probably take a bath on the sale ... if someone comes along and buys the
property during their lifetimes. But, from my albeit limited involvement
with this sort of thing, I believe they would have done poorly even if the
bottom didn't drop out of the economy in 2008. No parking, for example, would
make the businesses dependent largely on walk-ins.

There is much need and plenty of room for a lot near there - and also even
though the restaurants are large and the parking limited, they are usually
almost full... not far from public transports, large mosque - nor the Supremo
market either.

The good news is … the builder remediated (removed) about 6 feet of earth
and vented the old tanks…. so theoretically, the site can now be sold without
EPA issues.

The folks at the Mosque across the street had tried to buy the old vacant lot
for years, but the then owner wanted far too much money for the property BEFORE
any remediation costs.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next.

Is anyone interested in dominoes? I'd love to get a dominoes group together at

I have mostly played Turkey Foot, but I think Mexican Train is fun, and there
are probably more great games.
