[UC] Robbery last night at 48th Trinity Place
About 8:45 pm Sunday. Saw a police car and a Drexel Security car pulled over at the corner of 48th Trinity. The police took a young man to the 18th district to give a report. I asked the other two what had happened and they told me that it was a robbery and the victim just went with the police to give a statement. Everyone please keep your eyes open and stay vigilant. [UC] re: thanks for all the advice/offers on the flooding problem
To all: I did not manage to get back to all with thanks for their helpful ideas on my basement flood, so I thank everyone here. Luckily, the flooding rapidly subsided on Thursday afternoon -- as if the water was being sucked back into the cracks of the floor from whence in came in. Considering various options now. Meanwhile, I appreciate those who took time to make offers and suggestions. Ann

[UC] Pit bull off leash
This morning I saw a pit bull wandering around 48th Kingsessing. It look a little lost and perhaps older. I looked around and didn't see anyone who might be its owner. What does one do in that situation? Joe Clarke -- I think what weakens people most is fear of wasting their strength. [UC] Fwd: Scienteers at Lea Needed! (iPraxis - Science Volunteers)
Please see below for a volunteer opportunity in the neighborhood at Lea Elementary at 47th and Locust. iPraxis is also looking for Scienteers for Cook-Wissahickon, Locke, Northwood Academy Charter School, Martha Washington, Blankenburg, and Belmont Charter schools. Thanks! Amara Rockar WPCNS Steering Committee Chair https://sites.google.com/site/westphillyschools/ -- Forwarded message -- From: Amara Rockar aroc...@gmail.com Date: Mon, Sep 12, 2011 at 4:51 PM Subject: Scienteers at Lea Needed! (iPraxis - Science Volunteers) To: West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools westphillycoalitionforneighborhoodscho...@googlegroups.com iPraxis looking for volunteers to serve as ‘Scienteers’ at Lea Elementary. Scienteers act as mentors to a small group of students by sharing personal experiences, career opportunities in STEM fields, and by helping grow curiosity and interest in science and technology. Volunteers also help guide students as they work to complete a thorough science fair project. The time requirement for Scienteers is about 1-1.5 hours per week for an 8 week period. Times to meet with students vary but usually take place during or right after the school day, depending on the teacher's needs. Upon completion, students present their projects to guest judges at a school Science Fair. Select students then go on to compete in the city-wide G.W. Carver Science Fair (Lea students mentored by Scienteers won awards last year). Winners and mentors are also recognized at a celebratory event we hold each spring called iFunction. iPraxis also facilitates Career Days and special science presentation at its partner schools. Background checks are required but reimbursed for the Scienteers during Orientation. Orientation is scheduled as Scienteers sign up, dependent on their schedules. During the orientation, iPraxis goes over Science Fair project components and helpful insights to working with students. iPraxis is a non-profit located in the University City Science Center. Its mission is to create and foster opportunities that engage Philadelphia's underrepresented communities in science and technology through education, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. To become a Scienteer, please contact Meagan Hopkins-Doerr at iPraxis mea...@ipraxis.org. Please also forward this opportunity to anyone you know that may be interested. Thanks! Amara
[UC] news flash
You know those stores some people who didn't know what they were doing built on spec on the northwest corner of 45th Walnut? The ones that nobody ever rented -- and that actually aren't really finished on the inside? A For Sale sign just went up where there used to be a for lease sign. I feel bad for the people who put in their money (and their hopes) and will probably take a bath on the sale ... if someone comes along and buys the property during their lifetimes. But, from my albeit limited involvement with this sort of thing, I believe they would have done poorly even if the bottom didn't drop out of the economy in 2008. No parking, for example, would make the businesses dependent largely on walk-ins. - Alan Krigman KRF Management, ICON/Information Concepts Inc 211 S 45th St, Philadelphia PA 19104-2918 215-349-6500, fax 215-349-6502 krf...@aol.com or al.krig...@krf.icodat.com

[UC] Walnut West Chess Club: Volunteer Coaches needed
Hello List, The Walnut West Chess Club, which has been in existence for more than 4 years, is in need of volunteer coaches to assist me on a weekly basis conducting our class(es) and acting as mentors to the young students. Last year we had an average of 30 plus students per class. We attended many of the city-wide tournaments and even won a few medals. It is a very rewarding experience for the right person. The club meets on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the library. Please contact me off list if you are interested. Thank you, Joe Clarke philly.jo...@gmail.com -- I think what weakens people most is fear of wasting their strength. Etty Hillesumhttp://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/e/ettyhilles124704.html
Re: [UC] news flash
There is much need and plenty of room for a lot near there - and also even though the restaurants are large and the parking limited, they are usually almost full... not far from public transports, large mosque - nor the Supremo market either. The folks at the Mosque across the street had tried to buy the old vacant lot for years, but the then owner wanted far too much money for the property BEFORE any remediation costs.
