[UC] Mayfair Music

2002-05-12 Thread Ann W Dixon

Whomever was responsible for finding bands for Mayfair did an especially
good job this year. It was a nice mix of music, good musicians and a good
sound system. Thanks.

This is a sad story, but I think that Larry Falcon has a slight axe

 they were in fact tresspassing.

They were arrested on charges of trespassing because there are "no
trespassing" signs posted. The guard did
let them in. They were not charged with breaking and entering because
they didn't break to enter.

Re: [UC] Zoning Bill 643

2002-06-18 Thread Ann W Dixon

Lauren and all,

I was at the recent meeting about Bill 643. It was very poorly
advertised- I only saw a few flyers up. Jannie Blackwell's assistant has
said that there will be more public meetings throughout the summer about
this bill. I hope that they are better advertised than this one. When the
bill was first introduced the same thing happened- the city (illegally)
neglected to inform citizens.

Richard Redding, City Planner and presenter, said that Bill 643 doesn't
efffect or change current or potential group house status. I have ben
lied to many times by city officials so I don't know if that is true or
not, but that is what he said.

[UC] Modern Laundry site

2002-11-16 Thread Ann W Dixon
The modern laundry site, soon to be Eckert's Drugs, is owned by David
Adelman of Campus Apartments.

According to the Annual Report of Pennsylvania Land Recycling Program
Report 2000 from the Department of Environmental Protection, the site is
highly toxic. This not surprising since dry cleaning operations use perc
and other toxic chemicals. McDonald's corportion decided to buy the lot
down the street at 43rd and Market instead of the modern laundry site
because the 43rd St site is slightly less toxic.

Neighbors Against McPenntrification flyered that neighborhood so that
residents would be aware of hazards. Of course, the flyers on poles were
immediately ripped down, courtesy of the UCD. I don't know of any other
educational efforts. Whenever I mention it to a nearby resident, they say
that they haven't heard about this issue.

The Storage Tank and Spill Prevention Act of August, 1989, requires
responsible parties to fund and clean up site contamination using
certified contractors. The responsible parties include current owners
even if they were not the ones causing contamination.

[UC] 38th and Baltimore: say goodbye to the trees

2003-03-17 Thread Ann W Dixon
It's been about six years or so ago now, that the city wanted to
reconfigure the 38th St./Baltimore intersection. There used to be 3 big,
gorgeous oak trees in that traffic island. The city cut one, but citizens
got together and saved the other two by talking the city out of changing
the streets.

During the past couple of weeks workers have been taking core soil
samples on that traffic island and nearby island parking lot. This is to
see if the soil can support buildings on theses sites. Penn has indicated
in publications that they want to expand the nearby vet school. I don't
know what will happen to the roads when they do so. But, I bet that the
big healthy oaks and all the smaller trees (which Penn planted just a few
years ago) will be demolished.

Across 38th, are some more unusually healthy oaks and white pines. They
are slated to be killed to make way for the Life Science building.

[UC] Re: Bike traffic increases dramatically on Spruce St

2003-10-13 Thread Ann W Dixon
I think that the bike lanes are a huge improvement on Spruce. I used to
get squeezed out by cars when riding in the 4100 block and now I don't.

Having a cutout for parking for the south side of all of the 3500-3700
blocks, so there would be street parking by the hospital, Quad, and all
stores including Wawa seems like what also should have happened to me.

Re: [UC] yoga

2003-11-15 Thread Ann W Dixon
I have taken classes with Colin on Buckingham Place. He is a great
teacher. He has studied very seriously, even went to India, but realizes
that not all his students are so serious. He is completely free of ego.
The place is small, so students get lots of individual attention.

Class times are very limited and the building is cold, though.
