[UC] re: Purpose of this listserve

2009-12-22 Thread GeorgiaBSR
Wow! I guess, like everything else, it all depends on who is doing the
"talking". I am touched by the friendliness and the concern many people have
shown, and I will take their advice about learning who to listen to, and
who, not...just as in all of life. Silly me, not to have understood that in
the first place.

I will also check into the alternate listserve. (as some people have
suggested)..one just can't get too much information about the world in which
one
lives.

"Thank you" to everyone who responded. What an amazing neighborhood this
is to live in!

[UC] Purpose of this list?

2009-12-22 Thread GeorgiaBSR

Hi,
I have recently joined this list to get information about University City
and concerns about living here. However it seems to be being used as a
platform for individuals personal political beliefs and prejudices. I am
confused. Is this really the purpose of this list?

[UC] tax increase response

2002-08-16 Thread GeorgiaBSR

Much thanks to those who gave ideas on how to contest the tax increase.

To those who suggested we sell:
Increasing a house's sale value is of no use to those who do not wish to sell!
We want to keep these 2 apt houses that we lived in as students 35 ago and
have been trying to provide affordable housing to graduate students ever
since. We keep our rents low in order to do that. If our taxes are
significantly increased we will simply have to pass this on to our tenants.
THAT is what we are trying to avoid! We make only a very small income for
our semi-retirement from the apts...and that is fine for us.
We think it is short-sighted of the city to rob students of the possibility
of safe, pleasant, affordable housing in this university neighborhoodmuch
akin to the city wage tax that encourages people to live elsewhere if they
can!
Sincerely,
G. Roussos

[UC] tax increase

2002-08-15 Thread GeorgiaBSR

This issue may have been discussed while I was on vacation so sorry if it's a
repeat...but what, if any, recourse does one have to contest what seems an
unfair (to me) property tax increase? I live between 43rd and 44th on Pine
and they increased the value of my house $40,000 dollars! The attached house
(which I also own) is valued at $90,000 (also overvalued) and they just put
the value of my next door property up from an already overvalued $99,000 to
$140,300...raising my taxes over $1000 more. Totally ridiculous. If I could
sell it for $80,000 I'd be surprised. Both my houses have the same square
footage and have 3 apts. each.
I'm sortof afraid if I complain they will raise the tax on the cheaper house!
Is there any way to dispute this that is likely to work?
Thanks for any help,
G. Roussos
